Before you get too harsh, keep in mind that this is an industry standard. 10 years is a little short, most places are 15 years. If it's older than that you can sometimes talk them into working on it anyway. The off season is a good time to try, if they are busy (like during the summer) you can forget about it.

Sure, small shops will usually work on older bikes, but you also get Jim-Bob who worked on his own KZ900 for 5 years so he knows everything about bikes. Those places scare me!

The small shop I go to is a ways out of the way, but when you mention old bikes, they light up with smiles. They even schedule when to do work on your bike around their tech's schedules, so that you get a tech that knows that particular bike very well (usually because they own(ed) one or race(d) it).

on my 83 i will probably be running the BTs simply because i have one here on my parts bike but in the end both bikes will probably be running the Pirellis...and the 85 will def be getting pirellis when it comes time to do the CBR upgrade.

I have put on the Dunlop Qualifiers past 2 times and have performed great at both the track and street, though you give up mileage for the extra grip ....

ok, I know i'm drumming up an old-ass thread, but I figured since this one was bike specific, this would be worth bringing back up.

Currently my bike has Dunlop Arrowmax gt501 front and back, and IMO, the front sticks pretty good, but the back seems to wash out alot. It's down to maybe 1/3 tread, so that very well could be why, but since i'm going to put new tires on and swap the back for a 140/70-18, I thought i'd see if anyone had a better suggestion as to what tire to use.

I run Avon Roadriders on my 86 and they are super sticky. Only thing I don't like is they grab the rain grooves on the freeway but in the twisties they are great.

I bought pirelli sport demon tires front and rear and have had no problems, stick very good, heats up pretty quick but not the best on lasting. My bike is a shaft drive honda and the back tire is about 1/2 worn out at 2500 miles, front however is like new.

I will definitly get them next time.

I have tried dunlop and metzler and neither of them came close to the grip of the pirellis

I had Avon Azaro st45/46 (stock size: 110/80-17 140/80-17) on mine, I did 13000kms with them but I didn't like them too much...slippery when wet, slippery when too hot, front profile too sharp!

Now I have Dunlop Gt501 on my fk...standard size...It's a very good tire in my opinion: grippy when warmed up, warms up in winter too (yesterday here the air temperature was 7°C and in a corner I was near to drag the knee...astonishing!), stiff carcass...very precise in corners..... cons: It is really slippery when it's cold

here you can find the comparison between all the bias ply sport tires made by Bike Magazine....Avon Roadrider-Gt501-Bt45 seem to be the best choices for our bikes
