BZ I do appreciate the perspective. And yep I can understand that I may not use whatever mod to it's fullest. Especially since I'm not a super aggressive rider... yet... maybe.

Now if I change the front springs, based on my current rear settings I don't think I will be able to match it all that well. Meaning the extra I gain in the front is going to max out my rear or even limit the the front with the lack of rear adjustability. If I didn't have this front fork issue I would have left all alone. But I have kinda lost faith in what suspension that is on this bike.

So... that leads me to changing the front springs and a rear spring in the least. So many have said though that the over ride quality improves with a better shock. Now if I have a better shock with better control shouldn't I also "better" the valving in the front to even it out. If not that will save a whole pile of dough.

A bit of a dominos effect really. Like I said if it was good from the start I would have never thought anything of it. And wouldn't have this confidence issue with what's on there now.

Ultimately I would like a few different versions of my bike to test with different setups to see what will actually benefit my riding style.

I guess I could just change the fork and shock springs... if I never change anything else I will never know what I am missing, but will always wonder.

What I now for sure is that my sag was around 50mm... I NEVER want to experience that again. Haven't been able to test the newly adjusted to max 40mm yet but am hoping that it's rideable till I can do the mods. If I was only 150lbs that would be cool, but the least I will ever weight will be 200+.

Lucky I am thinking about all this when I have no $. Otherwise I would have had the whole lot already installed.

Wonder if there is a difference between Ohlins and the Penske's?

this is why I would like to do the whole package.

    Jason:

    Choices, choices, choices LOL!

I feel ya man. I've been reseaching what rear shock I plan on installing on the 97. It looks like I am going to do something with Penske becasue the track day organization I am a memeber of gets a discount on their goodies.

Ohlins and Penske difference? Not much from what people say. They both have a great product. Look at that...another choice!

    Keep us posted.

I've heard good things about these guys, may be worth adding to the list of shops. They do rebuilds, tuning and sell aftermarket components. They have some ballpark pricing on their site.

Now that is some juicy info.. I think I remember someone somewhere mentioning them. I will give them a call and see what kind of VFR experience they have. Unfortunately everything up here is very costly...

Well it's been quite a while since I figured out I needed to upgrade my suspension. I can now say that I have my shock on the way along with springs and valves for the front.

I went with an Elka 3 way for the rear. Heard a lot of great things about them and their :canada: too which makes it easy for service and so on.

[IMG] Pic of a 2 way, 3 way looks identical.

I'm gonna put the rear in myself and am thinking about doing the front as well. We'll see what it's gonna take, otherwise I will send the bits to RMR which is linked in the above posts.

Wow Mr. Smith, that is a sick looking shock. Can't wait to read the ride report once its all complete.
...and now I too would like to quote NCB and throw in my 2 cents.
Ah, but... a wise man can learn from another man's mistake, a fool must make the mistake for himself.

I think I will continue to follow the mods of people such as yourself and extract from said mods what I feel is a significant gain for a reasonable amount of time and money. I can then achieve similar accomplishments in areas that are not my expertise.

Holy cow man, that was a seriously deep post. I will for sure report as the process goes along, It's all going to hinge on the front and how well the valving turns outs. I don't want to have to go in and out of the forks ten times to get the right setup but at least with the valves they can be adjusted.
