howdy friends, new to forum and classic vfr's. just picked up my first classic 86 vfr700f looks good in the garage next to all the other old, ugly, honda's i have next to it:) only problem is the fuel pump is not usable. it works ok but leaks like a sieve because of a small pinhole in the pump diaphram. i am unwilling to pay the prices asked for a used pump, and have picked up a universal electric pump at the corner auto store. it is rated to 3psi and works fine, except when hooked up to the relay:) i assume it is because the relay wont supply enough power to my fancy aftermarket monster plastic pump. any one had experience with this issue before? im thinkin im going to splice in before the relay and install an inline fuse, as opposed to splicing into the ignition. (purely out of laziness. i dont want to do that much work).:redface:

The relay only turns on when engine is running.

more accurate, the pump fires about once per revolution of the crankshaft

i figured it would be something like that.i had noticed that the relay had a line runnin to the tach so i figured it only let through current on a rev system. sucked for me cause the pump i bought was fan driven instead of the diaphram type that was standard, and seems that it wasnt givin a full flow of power to the pump. went and pulled the relay and wired direct to the hot wire coming from the ignition, passed a ground over the bike and installed an inline 7amp fuse.works fiiiine:thumbsup: wished it coulda been easier...but hey:redface: when your converting an old beater to rat-tastic awesomness you cant afford to spend money on "fancy OEM parts" thx again for the info.

Very rare to have a bad diaphram in the pump.

i knew a bloke who didn't know he had a diaphram problem, and he's still paying for it 18 years later !!

im buggered how it got a hole in it, but it was there i could see through the damn thing. the bike i picked up, tho a runner has been abused. i had to unwrap half a roll of electrical tape off of the pump to remove it from the frame because the rubber housing was gone and poor feller tried to patch it. when it started leaking fuel on him it turned the tape into napalm. not a good thing. but a 35 dolloar pump and an hour work fixer riight up. and i only ended up usin a little tape:)
