I just bought a 1985 vf700 Interceptor and am having a problem getting it to accelerate. It starts up well and sounds good but the second I try to rev it it dies on me. It starts right back up everytime. I have tried playing around with the choke at diffrent settings but I can't get it to rev. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hmmmmmmm

    Let's cover the basics....

When you first go to start it you probably put the Choke on... My 85 VF700F can take anywere between 3-7 minutes especilly in this cold weather to warm up.. (it's been under 40 degrees here.)

Now... I had this issue when I first got mine and here what fixed it....

I was unsure when I first received the bike how old the gas was inside the tank... I emptied it

I then bought a can of Carburater clean tank treatment... Dumped the whole bottle in and filled the tank with fresh gas...

After this I could finally ride the thing... but sputtering and general suck acceleration occured...

I gave up..called a bike shop recomended by many friends as I tried to synchronize the carbs and I made things worse....

The Expert mechanic called me back within 2 hours of dropping it off and said he had a blast test riding my bike after he synched my carbs....

Some people will tell you it's easy to do... Personally I have seen bike were owners say they do it themselves all the time but when a person who does it for a living does it it comes out waaaaaay better...

Here's a little trick after you get your carbs synched and you need to force warm up your bike... (It works for my bike)

Start the bike... let it idle with choke for 1 full minute...usually enough tme for me to put helmet and gloves on, twist the throtle above 3000 RPM and release the choke and adjust the throttle to maintain 3000 rpm... goose the throttle a few times to verufy you can idle and rev....

Works like a charm on mine... NEVER EVER EVER ride your bike with the choke on.... Much smoking and horible fouled plugs will soon follow... I dare say try replacing your plugs or at the very least try cleaning them...

    Good luck!

When you changed the gas and added carb cleaner could you get it to rev? Mine literally dies if I just move the throttle a little? Any idea on any write-ups or links on how to sync the carbs. This is a long term thing for me so I would rather try to do it myself first and than take it to a bike shop. Thanks for your help.

    Sigh

Sorrrry man, I suck... I litterlly have sat down to respond to this 3 days in a row and have been called away from the desk each time... The Klymer manual documents how to synch the carbs pretty well but Experienced people have a better ear for it and can do in minutes what takes me hours to do...

For the Actual cleaning process.... Well, before the throttle synch it would take forever for the thing to warm up.... Upwards of 15 minutes before I could play with the throttle...

I would say try the clean gas treatment and a fresh set of plugs and let it sit at idle with choke for 5 minute or until it high idles... then try slowly removing the choke and then see if it will let you slowlyuy work the throttle... then start flipping the throttle.... Baby steps...
