I recently noticed hairline cracks running down the bracket sections that bolt the front mudguard to the fork stanchions. Being a bit of a nerd I have checked a number of other VFRs owned by friends or parked where I can inspect without arousing suspicion...... and noted that this appears to be a common problem.

One cause expounded has been the fitting of a fender extenda but the problem seems to be unrelated to the precence of one of these.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomena. I have a spare mudguard (thanks ebay) which is currently unmarked, should I reinforce it or does the problem lie with the fork bracing????

Yes, I had the same problem - not sure of the cause - could be just removing and replacing the guard and then tensioning the bolts. I had mine plastic welded.

    one thing.

Do you have a fender extender fitted ? the mudguards are prone to cracking in the manner you describe. Not much you can do except perhaps fit a couple of slim rubber washers to help.

No extender fitted - why would you need one??
Had my gaurd fixed up recently and repainted as I went down on some gravel on the left side - cost $1300 to fix up. Problem is the paint job is so good that my screen with its scratches looks out of place now!

here in the real world it rains...the stock mudguard does little to keep the crap off the downpipes.

    front fender mudguard splitting

    Hi,

No, I don't have an extenda fitted, most i've seen don't either. it seems this is a common problem which was why I wondered if the cause was flex in the forks. the rubber shim idea sounds worth trying to give some tolerance and hopefully relieve some of the stress obviously being tranferred through to the mudguard.

Seems unusual though on a bike that it so otherwise without design imperfection.....
