    CRAP!!!!

So I replaced the front sprocket on my '08 VFR with a 15 tooth. All was going well until I went to bolt up the cover. As I was tightening down one of the bolts that mount through the clutch slave, I got a dreaded pop and then free spinning bolt.

I pulled the bolt and it had two full threads of aluminum on the end. What I think happened was that the clutch rod had worked out a bit and the cover wasn't all the way on when I went to mount the bolts. The bolt in question didn't have enough threads engaged to take the torque. Also, I may have mixed up the bolt lengths upon reassembly. After getting the cover to fit properly and reinstalling the bolts, I am able to tighten without issue.

    Two questions...

Do I need to worry about losing two threads? Will the bolt hold with -2?

Where do the bolts mount? There is a very short one that is obvious and then there are three long ones, one of which is slightly shorter. Do the two longest mount through the slave?

Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts!

A problem which can happen if you don't have an "educated" hand or use a proppa torque wrench.

basically, now it looks like you need a new engine, right?

did you consult your service manual?? those bolts need to be be tightened in a prescribed order.

In your case you could might try putting some red locktite or JB Weld on the end of the problem bolt, don't over-tighten and hope for the best. Keep your eye out for any wierd movements from the clutch slave when pulling on clutch lever, which would indicate that further remedial action is necessary because of the damaged bolt hole .

look up a parts fische to see which bolts go where; my slave has one short bolt and 2 longs.

I recently was working on a buddy's '86 700 and found the same problem and came up with an ( if i might say) almost brilliant solution........

    Huh?

Not clear on the pics, one hole looks to be broken off at an angle, is that what the Squirrely one is making reference to? Sorry the glare in pics is confusing Toe and his weak brain.

Mixing up bolts can cause fuck up's of biblical proportions, if you must throw bolts at a repair it is always best to check to be sure they will work .

I checked both the service manual and a couple of parts sites' fiches. No luck on either bolt length or torque sequence. The manual does specify 26 N-m for an 8mm flange bolt per the "Standard Torque Values" on page 1-12. And I was using a torque wrench at the time the threads stripped. On subsequent installation, I ditched the torque wrench and went by feel and they felt nice and snug to me.

Drove it today and the only thing I *thought* I felt was a little vibration through the grips in neutral when the clutch was released. This may have always been there, but I never noticed it since I wasn't looking for any problems.
