I was wondering how you know when to change your brake pads, and is it easy to change them?

    Thanks,

    Mel

If you have the honda service manual, it tells you how thick the pads should be. Supposedly you can see them without taking the caliper off, but I usually take mine off and get a good luck at them to be sure. I can't remember what the thickness is off the top of my head. If you don't have the book, let me know and I'll look it up for you.

The stock pads have grooves in them. When the grove disappears, they're needing replacement. I don't have my book handy, but I'm sure there's mins on pads and rotors like Reg said.

Yeah, I checked the manual in the maintenance section and it's like Vlad said. Check the wear indicator grooves. If the grooves aren't there then the pads are worn down to them... Pads seem to last me a long, time, though. I have a set of EBC HH pads waiting to go on whenever they do wear out.

Me too. My '00 had done 27,000km when I bought it, it's now done just over 66,000km & the same brake pads are still there.

Well, I checked my brake pads, it didn't look like there was any wear on them. I guess I'm good to go for awhile.

    Thanks,

    Mel

Anyone have any recommendations on which pads? I have no problem with the OEM Honda but I'm sure there is something better out there.

    KC-10 FE out...

I do downshift almost all the time as I approach a stop or curve, etc. which probably helps increase their longevity.

KC-10 when I asked which pads, most said EBC HH, but there were a fw others mentioned. I bought the EBCs but they are still sitting in my toolboax waiting for the day when my current ones wear out (I think they are stock but last owner either installed them or they are still original) If they are original, they are around 41000 miles now...

Yeah, I use a lot of engine braking as well.

I've got no idea whether the pads are OEM or aftermarket.

When I bought the 4th gen in 2001 the pads needed changing within 10,000km from memory. OEM pads went in, those pads were still good ~85,000km later when the bike was written off.

So, when my '00 needs new brake pads I'll be quite happy for OEM pads to be used.

Changed my back pads at 32,000km. This is the first bike I have ever had to change rear brake pads/shoes. Must be the linked brakes. There is a steep pass near where I live and I ride it often. The linked brakes are a real help as I often trail the rear into corners.
    Changed the front at 38.000km

I have a little brake squeal (SQUEAL LIKE A PIG!), but I think I just need to lube the pad seats, the pads look like a good thickness still.
