    Hello everyone,

my name is Eelco Koppert and i'm fairly new here. I've been restoring a 2nd generation VFR ('86) for the past few months. This poor thing had been abandoned by the previous owner and stood in the yard for 5 years without as much as a cover. However the VFR proved resilient and i've almost completed restoration. (here's a pic before restoration: http://www.koppert.nu/eelco/vfr2.jpg)

My question is the following. I've ofcourse also done an oil-change and i've filled it with 3.9 liters as specified by the manual. However when I initiate the contact the oil light comes on and does not automatically switch off again. I've had it running for a bit and after a few seconds of running the oil-light does switch off, but I was wondering whether the oil-light should switch off before starting. Can anyone tell me what the correct working of the oil-check-system is. I'm kind of hesitant to put more oil in, since too much oil is usually worse for your engine than too little.

    with kind regards,

    Eelco Koppert

oh btw, does anybody recognize that stickerset?

The oil light will stay on until you start the motor. It goes off when it detects proper oil pressure, which won't happen until you start the motor.

Yup to the above. I always put a little of the new oil in the filter and roll it around so it gets absorbed by the filter media. Reduces the time it takes to build up the oil pressure when first starting it up after an oil change.

I usually hit the kill switch and crank the engine over with the starter in brief bursts until the oil light goes out.

I then release the kill switch and start her up for real.

if it was a rebuilt motor, and this was initial start up, then it might take a bit longer for the oil light to go off.

NOW that's the PROPPA way to do it : build up oil pressure b4 starting .......it protects the main and conrod bearings from scuffing by pumping in oil.

Thanks for the replies, I'll measure the time it takes for the light to turn off next time, I don't think it's long though. I guess my experience with yam's confused me. They have an oil-level indicator instead of an oil-pressure indicator.
