Had my new-to-me '96 VFR for a couple weeks of major fun!

Yesterday I headed out for some quick errands before rendezvous with a riding buddy at my brother's.
After the second start-up (3rd) battery seemed a bit weak... next time, no way!

Bump started and continued to another stop, bump again, this time firing up more reluctantly.
Reflection on the cars ahead revealed the dim yellow my headlight was emitting.

Then stopped in traffic waiting to make a left when the turn signal was actuated "POOF", stalled in the middle of a busy shopping district avenue.

Took three attempts to roll-n-bump restart this time... kept the revs up and headed for the highway back to my bro's garage. Along the way the speedo needle was all over the dial, mostly low, but the tach stayed steady.

Put the battery on the charger at 2 amps for a couple hours, testing showed no gain.
Picked up a replacement at an auto store, filled, sealed and charged at 2 amps for maybe 1 1/2 hour, tested out full charge.

Installed the new one in my bike, put the old one back on charge and bee-lined home in the cold dark of a November New England night... no place for a low battery induced candle for a headlight.

Today I went back and pulled the charger off the old cell which then tested full charge... "DAMN!"
I was hoping it might just be an old (original?!) battery at the end of the road, but perhaps not. :frown:

What is the consensus? Should I consider the die cast and order a new R/R?

What! contaminate a VFR with a Yamaha part, oh the shame. LOL you could go to Ricks as well to get a great RR.

you can check your voltage coming out of the regulator... is it is under 14 its toast..... but also make sure its not over charging that will boil your battery and then your out a battery........

I bought an 'after-market" RR and the voltage was all over the place and spiked to 18v; the Stock Honda unit is better but the Yamaha RR puts out the most steady voltage of the three.

The same thing happened to me - supposedly my bike had a new RR when I bought it, but the guy didn't mention that the terminals on the wire harness were scorched beyond recognition.

I'm going on 8k on my new RR with new 14 gauge wiring to the stator plug on the right of the bike.

My symptoms were identical to yours - it's the RR for sure.
