ok, been reading what i can find about the f2 shock conversion. i'm picking up the shock tomorrow. but am still unable to find the spring weight required. the only info i could find was that the vf500 needs a 950lb spring, so i'd presume that the 750 would need a higher weight spring. anyone know what spring i'd be looking for?

That depends on your weight of course! Drop me a note with that info and I can suggest the correct rate for you.

Here is a simple guide for the proper spring rate based on rider weight. Please note that it applies to the 83-85 VF700F and VF750F only, the other VF's have different leverage ratios so their spring rates are different:

    100-145lb = 1050lb/in
    145-180lb = 1100lb/in
    180-215lb = 1150lb/in
    215-250lb = 1200lb/in

Hi! I own a 1985 VF500F2 which has a bad rear shock.. I bought the bike used about a month ago with 59.000km but I don't know pretty nothing about the history of the bike, because the last owner had it for only the last two years and ran less than 1.000km.
For what I can understand it's not possible to repair the original shock, but it is possible to swap it with a newer one, changing the spring.
I'm in Italy, so it would be too expensive to send a shock overseas for modifying
I've found a good 2003 CBR600F shock for a very affordable price and I can easily (and with no cost) design the conversion supports to fit my bike and build them by the CNC machine I have in the factory where I work. Now the problem is the spring: what does happen if I let the stock CBR spring stay where it is? I'm 78kg dry  weight. Could it work? Can I compensate the "wrong" spring rate with a different air pressure?
    Thank you all

No, the stock CBR spring will not be heavy enough no matter what your weight is. If you try it you will find that it bottoms really easliy. There is no air pressure to adjust, even if there were it wouldn't help.

I understand.. but is there a modern shock that fits the VF500 without changing the spring and that "only" needs CNC works and tailored supports to be adapted to the bike? Not necessarily taken from a Honda!

    Thank you all again

The only one that I know of is the CB919 rear shock. The spring on it would be good for a rider in the 220lb range. Those are pretty difficult to find, I've only converted one to fit a VF.

Tingo - This is super common, I'd dare say most of the stock shocks are in some form of non-finctional condition these days. Check this out and let me know if you have any questions:

    Thanks guys!

I just found an used stock shock on Germany ebay.
Gonna give that a go first. Hopefully, it would work fine.
    Fingers crossed!

Keep in mind that besides being modified to make it longer, a CBR shock will also require a much heavier spring to work on the big VF's. I can help you out with spring rates if you need.
