Running in a new bike

    From my understanding - to run in a new bike you should also do short trips if possible, but long enough for it to fully warm up.

    You dont give too much throttle, but you still let it rev.

    Also, as the VTec doesnt kick in to over 6500rpm - shouldnt you rev the bike through this range as often as possible?

    Do you agree with the above?

    All it says in the manual is "Pay extra attention to how you ride it during the first 500km. During this period, avoid full throttle starts and rapid acceleration"

    Does anyone have any theories - ie how long you run should it in for before you can cane it?

    Usually you want to vary the rpm..... don't run at constant revs on the highway for instance. The first couple of hundred miles you should not be full throttle then you can gradually get closer to redline as you get closer to the first 600 mile service.... Problem is everybody has a different theory on this. My idea is that its new and its green right now. I have broken in a lot of motors and taking care in the first few hundred miles then getting that break in oil out seems to work for me. They definitely free up after the first thousand.

    I just varied the RPMs and rode really mellow for the first few hundred miles. To give you a heads up, that VTEC makes the motor sound like it's flying apart the first couple times it engages when new. Freaked me out the first time as I was sure something was wrong, but others I've spoken to said the same thing when they were breaking it in.

    break in

    I varried the rpm constantly the first 600 miles, ran the rpm up to 7000 and backed off. Ran to 8000 after 700 miles; 9000 after 800 miles; 10000 after 900 miles and redlined after 1000. I would run it up and back off at least once each ride. I changed the oil at 200, 600, 1000, and 3000 miles. (would have changed again at 2000, but was on a trip in northen calf). Found a big!? hp increase between 3000 and 4000 and then again around 5000. At 5000 I switched to golden spetro 10/40 synthetic blend. I was amazed at how smooth the bike was from the beginning and really amazed that changing to golden spectro made it EVEN smoother!
