to start off i just bought my 86 interceptor last week. it is my first bike and i know nothing about bikes...i mean nothing so if this is a stupid question im sorry. my problem is when the battery sits for a while it just completly drains to the point where the headlights even come on. i took the battery to ask powersports and they tested it and it had a full charge. so the other day i jumped the battery and the bike started right up. two hours later it was completly dead again? is this a common problem any suggestons would be great.
    thanks

Welcome to the forum. I don't really have anything for ya on this one. I know I'd start by putting an amp meter on the battery to see if there was a current draw when it was off.

From there all a guy can do is start chasing wires. Do you have experiance with 12v DC wiring like on automobiles?

There will be others along shortly and if there is a history of the early VF's having a problem like this, Jamie will know about it.

Rule of thumb...if the battery goes dead when the bike is just sitting, your battery is shot. If it goes dead while you're riding, you've got a charging problem.

I doubt if you've got a current draw problem, not a very common issue. The professional way to know is (as tinkerin points out) to hook up an ammeter. The 'quick and dirty' way to find out is to see if you have a bit of a spark when you hook up the negative battery cable, you shouldn't on your model if they key is off. You could also disconnect your battery while it's sitting, which would eliminate the possibity. If it still goes prematurely dead, your battery is shot.
