I have thought about riding year round...But I think "If: I did I would not do it on the VFR... I thought about finding a Nighthawk 250 or 700 as a "Winter/Don't care that it get's a lot of Salt" bike... But then I feel bad for the nighthawk....

Yo wassup Mainerider - I am a year round NYC rider. Always happy to hear there is somone else who rides year round so I do not look so crazy. Lots of funny moments and reactions from people when you ride in the winter, especially if there is some snow and ice. I do not use ezpass and the toll booth agents always bug out when they see me in the winter. The last couple of winters have not been so bad in NYC. I commute daily to work and do get out on the weekends to NJ, Pa, Ct, Md and sometimes Boston. I gotta admit that Ct can be really scary in the winter and night riding in the winter is when it can be rough. I am planning on doing some Polar Bear rides this year. It makes me laugh when people ask aren't you cold and say it is too cold to be out riding. Well, if it is so cold why are you out here and if you do not dress for the cold weather then it makes no difference if you are on a bike or walking to the store. Also, if I am riding and doing fine why do people have to keep coming at me with it is cold - yeah I know lol - not very supportive. To me the biggest danger riding in the winter is cagers do not expect to see a motorcyle on the road, going down on a bike in the winter and freezing before you can get help. Gotta admit I am curious how it is up in Maine. Definately keep me posted, maybe we can meet up and do some winter riding. Be safe out there and stay warm lol.

Great post; I just got a '98 VFR and am planning on riding year-round in northern CT- not the same latitude as Maine, but my ride home last night was 32-35F and as you said, the minor discomfort was nothing compared to the joy of the ride- and easily tolerated with some decent gear. I'm brand new to riding, really enjoyed your message and I'll look for you on my first trip to Maine!

MP? AP? SP? Interesting that you had to appear in municipal court with speed measurement records and engaged in pursuits. Generally as has been my experience any traffic citation issured by military law enforcement personnel is handled administratively by the accused's CO or top kick or goes to Federal Court.

Again we agree. I am probably not your type.

well as usual ..the military can issue two types of tickets.... a a dd form 1408 or a DD form 1805 one was for civilians and one was for soldiers although soldiers could receive either one depending on what they were driving... the military ticket went to the offenders commander and the other one was handled by a circuit court judge that came around once a month and did a traffic court couple of days or however long it took him to hear all the cases on the docket. and all we had to bring was PAPERWORK stating that the calibration was done correctly and that the equipment was in working order.... you know a little file that had current up to date records. and yes ...he was a federal court judge....that's why if you skipped out on a ticket issued by us you got a federal warrant for your arrest..... and I was an MP.... 95BV05 when I "retired."

Mainerider I apologize for high jacking your thread. or at least contributing to the continual high jacking of your thread.

MaineRider will be back with us shortly. They are thawing him out as we speak. One must pay strict attention to where various clothing labels are visable. The wrong garment worn inside out in harsh winter conditions can affect the thermal capabilities of said garment.

I looked up that MOS. It has changed from 95 to 31. FYI.

Yep, I pointed out that federal court was a different ballgame in several posts. Presentation of all evidence by the prosecution is mandatory. In civilian court in most jurisdictions subpoenas are required and the electronics technician must be present. Again my friend, in court one cannot cross examine a sheet of paper and military law does not apply in municipal court.

For more info on how it works in the world, I still suggest at least checking out from the Santa Barbara Library one or more copies of how traffic courts work and how to handle a citation. An excellent source is NOLO Press. Also a copy of the California Vehicle Code is a handy dandy to have when handing out legal advice with little or no experience in the actual arena.

As a retiree you can get counseling for those guilt trips and maybe even find a cute medical tech all at the same time.

No problem, Crusty; it's always fascinating to watch a post morph into the absurd...The way Bad Billy is carrying on this fued with you I'm starting to think he might be one of those flat-earthers; you know, the "I'm always right and I'll never apologize for anything" crowd. My ex-wife was like that...

    Hey Emon,
Thanks for the nice post. Let me know if you head up this way; we've got some great roads. It's not so bad here in southern Maine; we always get the usual 2-3 week "I can't believe how relentlessly and brutally cold it is" stretch but compared to northern Maine we have it easy. We also live right on the coast and the ocean effect tends to keep us a little warmer.

I've spent a lot of time in Aroostock County up near the Canadian border and it is brutal; I've driven through a snowstorm up there on Easter weekend before. It is a LONNNNNNNNGGGGG winter for the upper third of the state. You should visit sometime.
