I never know which to do. Do you stay drier if you speed up and get home faster or are you better off going slower? If you go slower, it takes longer to get home but probably fewer rain drops hit you. On the other hand, more drops hit you if you go faster but you get out of the rain sooner...Has anyone tried both tactics? Does the size of the rain drops affect how wet you get? I mean, a bigger drop probably spashes more...can water itself get wet?...I feel like a slice of pizza...

Interesting topic for someone who lives in the Pacific NorthWET and rides all the time! A higher level of caution is dictated in the rain and curves need to be strightened more vertically. I keep my tire pressures up (which reduces hydroplaning) but have noticed, strangely, that I always seem to ride faster. Unless you're behind a Goldwing sized fairing you're going to get real wet no matter what you do. I often ask myself why I ride so quickly in the rain and I've come to believe that speed and concentration increase proportionately and involuntarily...now if only the LEOs would have this same relization!

Mmmmm...... Pizza...... Food of the Gods......

Hmmm...... Let's see, faster or slower in the rain?

Well I guess I have to say that all depends on the pizza.

Plain cheese pizza, and I'm plonking along in second gear to get home.

Sausage, pepperoni, cheese, mushroom, raw onion, with ketchup on top pizza, and dude I'm riding at warp speed to get home. :pound::pound::pound:

How wet I get is the least of my concerns when the rain is falling. I just want to get home and not get killed ......thats most always what i'm thinking.

I find that my speed doesn't really change when I ride in the rain. I know that my hands and feet are going to get wet, as well as the area around my neck and it doesn't matter what speed I'm going. If it does start raining hard enough, I will slow down for safety. Otherwise I just ride my usual speed (65-70) and get the ride over with.

Those guys on Mythbusters did a comparison of running versus walking in the rain. Based on all their "data" you definitely stay drier by running.

So using that logic, I drive faster in the rain.

For a thread that started as a satire on other non-sensical threads, it worked out pretty well; some interesting responses.

I remember that but could not remember the end result. Tx

If you ride in the rain, you get wet. Buy good gear to stay dry. Slow down to stay safe. Maybe someday I will practice what I preach. I got good gear.

The reason you tend to stay dryier driving faster in a convertable is that your windshield is creating an air cushion that forces the falling water up and over your head. Big rigs will use the same principle by installing an air foil on the roof of the truck to force air up and over the trailer, thus cutting down the wind resistance caused when the flat front of a trailer is being forced against the air. Bug deflectors use this principle too. Note that you need not duck completely below the windscreen on your bike to avoid getting bug guts on the shield of your helmet.

    bahahaha. That's sooooo true!

But yeah, I'd say drive slower, get safely wherever you're going. Doesn't matter how wet you get. Unless you're risking hypothermia. In which case, drive as fast as hell. That way if you crash, you die quickly. 'Nuff said.

Call me a pu$$y but I try my hardest to avoid riding in the rain altogether. I've been riding motorcycles on the street for 20+ years and I have plenty of confidence in my own skills...I just don't trust the many idiot cagers who share the wet roads with me.

    Regards,
    Rollin

I've crashed in the rain twice, lost the rear end the first time, lowsided, picked it up and rode home, second one was wierd, lost traction front and rear, did everything but hit the ground but i still call it a crash. Now i just slow down but i do tuck my feet in well and a 3rd gen fairing will keep you very dry

I wouldn't worry about being called a pussy by some internet, wannabe, tough guy. i think it's fucking ludicrous that anybody would gauge the intestinal fortitude of a person based upon their ability to come in from out of the rain. I do not see it as some badge of assumed honor that you are willing to torture yourself by either freezing yourself to death or by riding around in weather conditions better suited for a watercraft. you can flap your gums all day long on the interwebz, but it only takes one glance at a persons tires to see who can really ride.
