    Hello,

This is my first post. I see that there is some great information available on this forum.

I recently purchased a 84 VF1000F in Edmonton. I live in Vancouver and bought it "sight unseen". It is in reasonable condition for its age and I would like to restore it completely.

The instrument cluster has the MPH as the predominant indication of speed and I do not see a transport canada logo on the VIN plate as my other motorcycles do. The odometer reads 36000 and was advertised as Km's.

I am questioning if this bike was originally purchased in the US and I was misled on the mileage. I could probably take it for a ride to see if the odometer increments on miles or kilometres, but it is pretty rainy here right now. It wont really impact my plans to restore it, but I am just curious.

If anyone can help me tell if this is a CDN or USA bike, that would be great.

    Thanks
    Tim

Thanks, I know the bike was manufactured in Japan. I just dont know if it was originally imported into Canada or the US.

I am not sure at this point if the bike has 36000KM's or 36000Miles (58000kms) on it.

Thanks again for the response, but I already know that the country of origin.

I am trying see find out what market the bike was originally intended. For example all Corvettes are made in Kentucky, but the ones sent to Canada have KM/Hr on their speedo's and a transport Canada sticker.

If there is a fellow Canadian that could respond that c ould tell me if the Speedometers had MPH as the predominant indicator in 1984 (outside labels on the speedo) that would tell me a lot.

Ultimately, I just want to find out if the odometer reading is miles or kilometers.

Its clearing up here now, maybe I will take it for a ride around the neighbourhood and do an odometer check.

    Sorry

Not all Americans who ride old Vf's are as, well, "dense" as the first guys to answer your thread. I can't tell you with absolute assurance that you have an American market VF. But the fact that it has a MPH speedo would seem to indicate that. Of course the original guages could have been replaced with US units. That leaves the mileage # in question. I am certain that there is someone who will see your thread who has the knowledge regarding how the VIN or some alternate marker can be used to determine which market your Vf was originally sent to. I'm going to track another Canadian member whose Avatar is 'Slowbird' and see if he can help you. Don't judge us all by the initial responses. I am sure that Slowbird can tell you where and what to look for, and if he can't he'll direct you to some other member who can.

    Thanks Everyone,

I did end up taking it for a ride and it is definitely clocking up the odometer in km's (which is a good thing).

This bike originally came out when I was 16 years old and a neighbour had one. I thought it was the absolute coolest bike ever.
The interesting thing is that I remember that they didnt sell very well. At the time, in Ontario, there were many non-current large displacement bikes that were on the showroom floor that were 3 or 4 years old. I also remember a 1985 VF1000R that was still available brand new in 1988. The price was $3999 CDN. I wish now that I had bought it.

Anyways, I am sure I will be asking many questions as I restore this F bike.

WELCOME! I really love(d) my 1000F's. Great bike. I like them better than the 1000R, which always felt heavy to me. Interesting how it seems that perhaps the face on the speedo was changed. Guts must be metric if it is registering in klicks. Please post up some better pics too! Here is a bigger pic of the one in my avatar:
