....maybe its me,,,,but i have been witness to some pretty dangerous situations lately concerning "commercial" trucks....sudden lane changes....tailing too close...at high speeds....they make me nervous....i realize there are some excellent drivers out there,,,but i seem to be seeing the amateurs lately....any comments?

Having been a commercial driver and now a firefighter I can agree with your assessment. There are plenty of good drivers but the yahoos stand out. I think the biggest problem is the drivers being paid by the mile. This causes many of the problems. If the companies were forced to pay an hourly wage the roads would be much safer. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe its different up here but in general I would rather have truck drivers than tin cans. But of course as I have said this a truck will probably try and cream me tomorrow. The joys of the world we live in.

Ride like they're trying to kill you!

Keet... I feel your pain. Truckers are no worse that others, but those trailers are awful damn big! When I dropped my FXD on I-65 between Nashville and Birmingham in the rain, at the Guy Hunt rest area (named for noted crooked Republican governer thrown out of office for theft... but he loves Jesus!)

Several truckers stopped to help what appeared to be a catastrofic wreck.

No one has the patent on being a Dee-dee-dee.

That said, lot's of things piss me off.(Since you ask).

I sign off all my articles "Ride like they're trying to kill you...they are!":usa2:

Legs is right - they are trying to kill me. I've been riding for 26 years, Germany and the States (all over). But since I moved to the Tidewater area of Virginia 5 years ago I have never felt so at risk due to tractor trailer traffic. This area is a sea/rail shipping center and the truck traffic is intense. With the added burden of numerous bridge/tunnels the traffic is a mess and the truckers drive like everybody else: like they're in Porsches! I had to take a new job closer to home 'cause I knew my number would be up soon.
The worse came last week when an unmarked watermain break left 1/2 foot of water on the road. It was bad enough trying to 'navigate' through it on two wheels, but when a trucker passed me on the right he sprayed me with water that almost knocked me over.

are there bad driver out there you betcha.are there bad motorcylists out there damm right. so many times ive been hassled by squids scared of trucks. driving slow then speeding up and hanging me up in traffic. guess they dont want me to pass.that and braking in the middle of turns thats the worst always think there gonna fall.also most pepole will let cars and motorcyles out but leave me in the lurch, and when i do get out its a slowmotion race till they get past whatever was holding us up. why are most pepole so scared to pass.

My personal favorite is when a truck decides to pass another truck and then takes 4 counties to complete the maneuver. I know for a fact those trucks can go faster than that. I'd be willing to bet they do it just to piss people off.

My Mom is the Director of Safety for a small trucking company & she's said to me many times that truckers have two log books. The one they show at weigh-in's/cops/feds & the "real one". I agree 100% about the pay by the mile BS. It encourages deceit and is dangerous for both the truckers & others on the road. Pay the drivers salary or hourly and it can only help.

    KC-10 FE out...

guess you want to pay 10,000 dollars for a roll of toliet paper. if you pay a long haul trucker by the hour, you would be paying a guy for a month or better. thats how long they stay out.now i would say this there not playing games most truck have a governer and also when going up hill they slow down.one thing to remember trucking is one of the hardest jobs out there.all the time away from home .all the pepole messing with you, your going to fast to slow. not in the lane they think u should use.the number of time ive been messed with by 4 wheelers couldnt be counted. maybe pepole should really analize there own driving.ive got 1 millon miles with out a truck accident that was my fault.been hit once but a guy driving down the shoulder.if a truck has tried to pass 3-4 times maybe u should speed up and dont let him catch back up.and if they really piss u off stay offthe road the trucks pay the lion share of the taxes for the damm road anyway.see how long you would last without those damm trucks

It might cost a little more but companies would quickly become more efficient in loading and unloading if they were having to pay you to sit in your truck and wait. I've waited 8hrs to get loaded at owens corning (shingles) in memphis. Then you have to fudge your log book so you have time to drive. Like anything else there would be problems in the transition but would be much safer in the long run.

    Huh?
So, you're saying we should put up with the added risk they add because they pay so much in taxes, have a really tough job, and are away from home a lot. If we don't like it we should stay off the roads.
There are a lot of reasonable pepole on this list. We can rationalize that truck traffic adds much to the economy and without it the cost of consumer items would be greatly increased.
If I screw up at most I will hurt myself and maybe damage another vehicle. I've seen some cyclist do incredibly stupid things. When a car driver makes a mistake he might hurt himself and a few others, like me. When a trucker takes such apparently mindless risks as I have seen some do, he can do considerably more damage. It's called the Law of Gross Tonage.
All I'm saying is truckers seem to be taking greater driving risks bringing the chance of far greater consequences.
If they can't take the added taxation, the tough job, the long hours, and the absence from home without causing others significantly greater risk of injury, they should stay off the roads.

Among the many things that piss me off!

I have been thinking about this post (stand back!) Really when I'm strafing the "Copperhead" or any of the great twisties here in Alabama, I've found that the most dangerous idiots were't truckers, mothers in SUVs, or hillbillies in trucks. My nemesis seems to be middle aged guys in worn out Buicks or another clapped out GM product trying to show that they are as fast as the bikes in the twisties.

Oh, for a hand held rocket launcher!:drum:

PS, You pay them by the working hour, not the sleeping hour, it doen't add a dime to cost if managed correctly.

    I agree with Grinder

As a ex Californian, I'm blown away about the driving mannerisms of the people here in the PNW, people sill drive with manners, they let you in when coming onto the freeway at rush hour, no tailgating and the truckers don't seem too bad.

I do like that saying Ride like they're trying to kill you, because I always try too prepare for the worst case scenario in any situation...
