Please help: I have been scraping my knuckles for 2 hours now. What is the secret to the filter removal. This is the first oil change so it is the original filter from the factory.

The first oil change is always a pain. The filter is usually on so tight that it seems impossible to remove. When I did the first service on my bike @ 2 months ago, I had to end up removing it the old fashioned "screwdriver thru the filter" method. I had the proper size oil filter wrench, but it kept slipping on the filter so I had to resort to tougher methods.

I had the same problem. I ended up taking a large screwdriver and gently tapping the base of the filter in the direction I wanted it to go. Seemed to work pretty well. Some people have used a chisel but a large screwdriver will work. I also put a piece of aluminum foil under the filter and used it to keep the oil off the pipes, makes clean up easier.

I think I used a large pair of channel lock pliers.

Thanks for the advise, I ended up using the screw driver method, it worked fine. To bad I didn't do that first, I would have saved some skin from my knuckles. I also broke one of the clips, hopefully I can pick up replacement clips at the dealer.

I had bought a wrench, teh type that goes ont he end of the filter and you use a retchet to turn that fit a fram filter, but it was just a tad large for the Honda brand filter. It was the next to smallest size and the second wrench i bought was the smallest size and it fit the Honda filter just right.

on my pickup i worked on the filter for almost an hour once before going to a friends shop. (he works on tansmissions) he loaned me a filter wrench that looks like pliers on steroids with big gnarly teeth kind of in a half moon shape. they worked like a champ and I know where I'll start if I ever run into a difficult filter again.

I have a motorcycle specific oil filter wrench that makes changing the oil a snap. It's the kind that goes onto a ratchet & it's expandable to fits multiple sizes & it automatically tightens itself as you rotate the ratchet. I got it at a local Napa for the paltry sum of $12.

I thought I was the only one that did this. Definitely a good technique.

    KC-10 FE out...

After using the old screw driver through the filter trick I bought one of those plastic fitted caps that goes over the end of the filter, it has a slot for a ratchet wrench and that worked great to get the new one on a bit tighter than what I could do by hand. I don't think any of the other conventional filter wrenches would work due to the lack of space around the filter.

easiest method is to put a radiator hose clamp on the filter right near the base, then put an 8mm socket and extension over the clamp screw and tap on the socket extension to turn the filter.

maybe off topic but when you replace get a k&n. it has a nut on the bottom of the filter.makes it easy to get off.

I use a Fram PH7317 filter, has the end dipped in rubber so it's easy to grip. Plus it's about 3/4" longer so a little more filter surface.
