Well guys, remember me mentioning the tapping sound on the little VF I bought a couple months ago? I got a call from the service dept at the local dealer and the manager thinks its a rod and estimates the cost in the four figure range. Naturally I told him 'hell no!' I'm supposed to go pick the bike up tomorrow. Now, I'm kind of at a loss of what to do with the bike. I'm not 100% convinced because he only listened and didn't check anything, but I didn't want him to go any further if he's throwing estimates like that out beofer he really looks at the bike. Anyway, we head out for hawaii tomorrow so I wont be doing any maintenance anytime soon... I'll try to check in with the board and see what's happening again...
You already know the answer to this. 1. Pull the motor out, replace with another motor from a cheap or junked VF500. 2. See if you can resurect the original motor after tearing it down as a spare for parts.
Ack! I was afraid that was going to be the first reply. I'll keep an eye out, but I may cut bait. If I part her out, I can just about break even. I don't think I'm mechanically inclined enough to fix it, but then, this could be a learning opportunity for me. I have the time. Do I have the desire... It's tough cause the VF is the 2nd bike....
I don't think that swapping the motor out is too big of a chore. Seriously the key to successfully doing it is patience, bagging and labelling everything you remove, and approaching things one bolt at a time. If you have an open bay in the garage, this is doable. That's how we always got the jets back together when I was in the USAF.
