When I was 20 and single I purchased a brand spanking new VFR700 interceptor.

Now im nearing 40 - and just got single again - I wanna buy a brand spankin new VFR800 - and do some miles.

    However ive 3 options

    1) Theres a good second hand 5th generarion one locally for AU$9000
17000 km on it - immaculate condition

    2) I can get a Brand new 2005 model, old stock 6th gen, AU$15,000

    3) Brand new 2006 model, $AU16,000

Q1 - Which one would you take and why?

Q2 - Is the difference between the 2005 and 2006 worth the extra money
(nicer colour, clear indicator lenses and a slightly different Vtec tuning)

Any help be appreciated - im hoping to be riding by the weekend.

Most people would tell you to go with the used 05. But IMO I would go with the new 06 if you can afford to. I believe that there is nothing better then to break in a new ride yourself then to get one already broken in

I'll vote for the used 5th generation.

    Why?

You get the gear driven cams which the 6th gen missed out on.

I have one & it's an awesome bike!!

I'm not trying to steal this thread...but what years have the gear driven cams?

And why are the gear driven cams better?

I have spent a good bit of seat time on the 4th,5th, 6th gen bikes.
Between the 5th and 6th gen, my favorite is the 5th gen. Why because I ride toward the sporting bias - I like(no love) to turn corners! The 5th gens engine does not have the VTEC which puts a goofy spike in the power band when it switches on - the 5th gen is smooth and trackable from the low revs and up. The 6th gen has taller bars and weighs a good 40lbs more than the 5th. So my impression of both - the 5th is the sport bike the 6th is the touring bike. (Its just me but if you are looking at a 6th gen you might as well also be looking at a Yamaha FJR1300, same style and purpose of bikes.) Needless to say for me a 6th gen will never be on my shopping list.

Thanks mello - your views have helped

Supprisingly, your views have made me decide the series 6. Ill tell ya why.

I recently owned a R6 - which was a blast to ride. Especially in the twisty fun roads of the New Zealand South Island. However after about an hour in the seat, i was lucky if i could stand up straight after getting off.

Now ive mooved to aussie, the roads are a bit smoother, booringly straighter. And it takes you hours and hours to see something different.

I love riding, so i intend to spend a bit more time in the seat.

Im getting older - so im slowing down - just a tad, after a bit of comfort.

BUT IM NOT AT THE GOLD WING AGE JUST YET!!!

You say the series 6 is a bit bigger - sounds like it will shield me from the elements a bit better.

You must admit, the series six looks horny.

Well ya only live once, I think ill go with the 2006 model.

The 6th gen will be a good choise for situation. I may have sounded negative toward it - but it still is a slick piece, a fine solid ride. Maybe Honda should stick an Acura badge on it instead?

I vote 5th gen, NO gremlins hiding in the motor, lower cost for valve adjustments, NO VTEC GIMMIK, The 5th gen motor has the gear driven cams as where the 6th gen has the nasty cam chains/ crappy honda cam chain tensioners.....point.. people who have both models often choose to sell the 6th gen and keep the 5th as it easier to work on and modify and aftermarket pipes for the 6th gen are $$$expensive....

    Gear drven cams?

    Phoey

My 87 model had em, they cRapped out. First models had a backlash system which had springs and retainers. The spring retainers broke on my old girl. Was the only glitch with me ole veefer.

No one else had em. so why did honda drop em?

Well, reading these strings sucks a big one...I love the looks of the 6th gen, I had a 5th gen. All my friends called my bike a goldwing cus they were driving R6's, ZX6RR, CBR600RR, mind you none of them ever drove more than an hour in the seat, I like leaving town once in a while. I want a comfy racing bike, maybe a 5th gen with less weight and more power. It sounds like going for a 2006 or 2007 VFR would be very disappointing.....? I saw the ZZR1200 from Kawasaki on the internet last night, nice lookin..How would a 750 suzuki Katana compare, if anyone knows?

I vote but it sounds to late, 5th gen. better yet 4th gen. Awe but that wasn't on the list now was it. 6th gen new, I wouldn't as something is in the mix for 07-08 ,so biggest bang for the buck would be the used 5th, as far as the gear drive issue you had, yep they did that back then, but thats something Honda jumped on right away so it hasn't been an issues for years. Still you won't go wrong with any VFR, just other versions are better at doing certain things.. So pick your poison, as it sounds like you have all ready. you getting a white One? mmmm thats a nice one IMO

Lots a good points and personal opinions on which one to get BUT I think the most important part to consider is what are you willing to Cash out and what will be your main use.

You can tell that others prefer 5th Gen for the gear driven cams whether this will make a difference on YOUR preference riding style or mechanical skills then it's a sound advice.

It seems that you've chosen the 6th gen - pearl white -, you're already ahead of the game. =)

I've been riding sportsbike since day 1 and I had my share of Ninjas, GSXRs, & the latest 600rr from Honda (driven an R6 & r1 but never owned a Yamaha - no specific reason) and since my commute distance is a significant factor, I decided for the 06 VFR (in Pearl White).

I've only had the VFR for 21/2 weeks and had 2000 miles already  but it's the second time I've been stopped by people to take a picture of the bike . I even took it to a shop for regular inspection and mechanics stopped and checked out the bike. They gave me  .

    Buy new newbie!

I Refer to a new article in a Brit publication "Two Wheels Only" September 2006, page104. Buying a new bike is the cheapest in decades. Keen pricing combined with loads of machines offered at 0% financing means some buyers looking to buy nearly-new are opting for brand-spanking machines instead. The price difference between like new and new is so small, why inherit someone else's problems. Great magazine, and good advice. Good Luck
