i recently bought this bike with 75000ish kms this year ive kept up with oil changes and some fluids the bike seems to be running good now that i took the gas tank off and shook out the rust and rust coated it what other things should i look at to replace or help maintain the bike? its all stock as well

any advice would be appreciated it runs pretty good only problem i seem to have is 6th gear runs like ass 5th gear get the bike up to 140 easilly and 150 pushing it

pop it into 6th and it literally drops down to 120 and maxes out at 140 after along time at full throttle would rust in my carbs cause this? and what else can i do to keep it maintained?

-and finally where can i buy a after market windscreen for a reasonable price? or can i sand and paint the stock one?

I sanded and painted mine, came out good. I used a black Fusion plastic paint.

80,000kms?!?!!? Holy shit guy.....that's crazy.

Your 6th gear problem sounds odd. Does it rev freely throughout the RPM ranges in every other gear?

For maintenance make sure your chain and Sprockets are in good shape.

(I have a brand new Rear sprocket on a wheel with a brand new tire if you wanna talk buying it off me....since you're soo close)

Maybe think about getting the carbs reuilt and a valve clearance check.

(I know a guy in Stoufville who specializes in our bikes)

and if i remember correctly my lower 3 gears all rev to the red line and each gear after that kinda decreases 4 and 5th stop at around 10000 but i have never tried to full throttle it to the redline in those gears just because there is no point, but 6th gear i dont think i can get over 7000 rpms

You can't possibly be talking about miles per hour?

I find it a little hard to believe that a 23 year old VF500 can push 150mph in 5th Gear. That is unless you are using Slick50 like the rest of us

    No he means KM/H.

    150km/h = 94mph
That's what we go by up here in Canada

It may not have anything to do w/ your transmission. It could be your motor is on the tired side and not able to produce the power needed to push the bike faster in 6th gear. Obviously 6th is a larger gear - and it does need more power to increase its rotational speed. I imagine it can maintain a steady speed in that gear, just cannot INCREASE very well?

Or does it feel like youre hitting a rev limiter? Or does it feel like it's just dying and has no more go?

You think it's the motor? If he's punching it through the gears and he gets to the top of fifth and switches to 6th and it suddenly falls on it's face......sounds quite odd.

    No...mine will keep on going.....odd.

I agree with the "tired" motor.

A friend has a 2006 R6 track bike with close to 15,000 track miles and he was just stating the same syptoms. (He's in Advanced group, so his engine gets a work out).

Bike runs fine, but in top gear she just doesn't have what she used to. Bike doesn't leak oil, blow smoke, nothing. Riders at the track more knowledgable than me all came to consensus on the issue.

This old 500 sounds similar. Alot of miles but she still runs. Do your regular maintance and don't worry about it...you are on the street.

The reason I think that is that he can't redline 5th or 6th.
