My GPS, just like the overwhelming population's, mounts to my cage's windshield via suction cup. While in my driveway, this very same suction cup "sucks' quite effectively on the inside of my VFR's stock windscreen.

I am fairly certain that if I attempted to ride with the GPS adhered in this fashion, Mr. Murphy undoubtedly will see to it that the device falls off and seasons the road with a sprinkling of unservicable, un repairable, Chinese plastic, glass, and circuits.

    So has anyone tried this?

Haven't tried it on the windscreen but did have it stuck the the tank, just forward of the fuel filler door. It stayed on securely but was kind of hard to see in - the angle was too low and/or the sun would wash out the display. Also, the mount isn't the regular suction type - this particular mount has one of the little lever things like a mini-dent puller type suction cup. During the trial run i did have the mount tethered to my tank bag with a zip tie just in case the mount lost it's grip.

I tried mine using the suction cup on the windscreen and it came loose, but I had tethered it just in case, so no harm was done. I now use a magnetic RAM mount the very few times I use the detector. Haven't used it for the last 8,000+ miles of tours, though.

Just wanted to add that it would fall off my cage windshield on a regular basis, too.

Magnetic RAM mount? I didn't know they made such a thing. Off to google it.
