I recently purchased a slightly used 08, I live in So. Cal. and lately the temps have been up there. Right out of the dealers shop in found myself in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the bikes temperature soared until the red light came on. My only salvation was to split traffic and somehow keep moving. I am not comfortable with this type of riding.
I have since read that these bikes overheat fast. I have also noticed that I will heat up just going up a grade.
So, whats the typical fix for this? The shop mechanic said I might try "Engine Ice" Is this stuff harmful, will it help?

    How hot is hot

VFR can get up to 225 before the fan kick in, so don't wory:ninja: I believe the warning light will come on at 245° that when you need to pull over and let her cool down. I rode year round and in harsh condition in the summer and never get to the point the light go on. Hope this help:thumbsup:

I had a similar problem but not to the same extent. I did a double flush of the coolant with straight water, and IMPORTANTLY, cleaned out the overflow reservoir, which was full of deposits from the old coolant and had a blocked outlet. I then changed to red O.A.T. coolant, and saw an immediate 10-15 deg C drop in the same weather and riding conditions.

    +1 on engine ice
engine ice will help your cooling system shed some extra heat that your engine is producing.
look into getting a power commander and having it properly tuned.
a power commander with a good tune will stop your bike from from running too lean,
and your engine will there for produce less heat, that your cooling system isnt capable of shedding...

When you say "Right up there" how hot do you mean? I've ridden my '07 in stop-and-go traffic when it's 90+ and it hasn't overheated. You should hear the fan come on around 220 or so (I can't remember the exact number), and you should feel hot air blowing out on your left leg through the radiator on the left side. If not check to make sure the fan is actually working. It could also be a thermostat but I'd be surprised on a bike that new.
