Because Im a cheap f**k and am not into the brand name theme, I did some research to find a substitute for the over price K&N Air Filter oil. If you web search "K&N Air Filter Oil MSDS", website results will show what the oil is composed of. There is a particular website that compares the 'ingredients' with other products, and so the Walmart SuperTech brand 85W-90 gear oil is the same as well as Valvoline. Gear oils are a paraffin based petroleum products.

Since I already have SuperTech, I simply rubbed a light film of oil into the filter and best of all, kept money in my wallet.

MSDS = material safety data sheet. Those of us in industry have the "right to know" what we are exposed to with the materials we work with. These sheets describe the composition of a material, the side effects of exposure, long term effects, what to do if ingested/inhaled, etc.

Being your bike is fuel injected, I'm not sure you want gear oil getting in your intake system. FWIW

it's a light film, but when gear oil is cool with the air intake, it's very resistant to flow (viscous).
If it were a problme, the K&N is doing every customer a disatisfaction by selling a filter that requires a gear oil-like substance for lube.

I bought a big can/bottle set of the K&N cleaner and recharge fluid early this year. They weren't that $$ and should last me a few seasons. I'm all for saving a buck, but this stuff is worth it IMO.

What is it, like $8 for an aerosol can of the recharge spray??? It's good for at least 5 or 6 applications.

Any old degreaser can remove the old stuff.

Good luck with the axle lube.

    ^^^^^

I agree, I'm cheap too but 8 bucks isn't going to break the bank.

Glad you have a 'cheap' alternative Kobe but I'm really unsure if its worth it. A co-worker of mine worked in the chemical industry for years and he stated the MSDS sheets may list the same or similar chemicals, BUT that doesn't mean they are the same products.

Trust me, this cat knows what he's talking about. He was in R&D specifically.

$17 for the bottle of oil where im at. $8 more in my wallet for fuel.
I understand the cost and am not breaking the bank, but am choosing not to pay for snake oil. Large diesel engine air intake filters or oiled with gear oil.
I wouldn't buy a K&N filter but it came with bike so I go with the flow.

So I pay $8 for the 1L of gear oil and it has many uses beyond differential oil.

Look up the K&N oil and see what's in it then compare it to a typical conventional gear oil. You would be surprised at the similarities. You think K&N has really dumped so much $$ in R&D and manufacturing to sell a unique air filter oil?

Wait a sec. You didn't even have to pay the $40-$50 for the filter and you're complaining about paying a few bucks more for K&N's fluids that will last you a few seasons, AND which cost a few bucks more than buying one new OEM air filter that will get you thru just one season?!

Just kidding, Kobe. I'm one of those form-function guys, too, and when I see a chance to save some dough I usually take it.
