Hello folks- been riding/racing for 30 plus years, and my wife now wants to join in the fun. I have always loved the VFR line, and think this is my chance to come on board. I'm looking for an 800, I think either an '03 or '04m and am looking to spend between 5-6,000 for the bike. Any advice anyone might have? I am clearing out my garage by selling my two dirt bikes. This will help fund the purchase, as well as providing space in the garage. I am in north Jersey. Thanks in advance.

    Steve

welcome steve, great choice of bike!

tell us a bit more about yourself.

you have 30 years of riding...is that all off road?

any previous road bikes of any type?

what sort of riding do you plan on doing mostly? touring, sport,?

your looking at a 6th gen which will suit 2 up well. if you can get a later model year, say 06/07 for the same $ but with more miles that would still be ok.
as a general rule the V4 is a strong mill and so long as it hasnt been abused it should be good to go. the general condition of the bike is always a good indicator to its past history, as are newly replaced items on older bikes!
ask questions when your looking...and check back here if you want a second opinion.

good luck getting your first Viffer...

Started riding on the street in '76 with KZ400. KZ1000 next year. Did 10000 unfaired miles around the US in '78. All sport bikes during my time. Main ride since '96 is a 1994 Ducati 900CR. Roadraced 600 Hurricane in Aamrr, Wera, and AMA/CCS stuff during '87-'90. Been doing track days ever since, also as a coach at the track days. Did a couple of years with the Duc, and now a Gixxer 600 full track bike. Passable off road skills during the years, but here in Jersey, it's tough to get to places to ride, so the 2 dirt bikes are leaving the stable to make room for the new bike. I look forward to expanding my VFR horizon and think it might be a good choice. Ridden a lot of stuff over the years, but never a VFR. I can't wait to take one out.

VFRs are the personal bikes of Reg Pridmore and Paul Dean. Bought my 91 in 91. Other than the infamous regulator/rectifier failures that are discribed in detail on any VFR source, great bikes.

Ok steve, sounds like you know what your about on a road bike!

with the gen 6 the biggest difference will be the VTEC system they run. given your background i have a hunch you'll like it.
but it does tend to polarise opinion.

other than that it is simply a matter of trying her on for size.

i also started my early days of road bikes on the kwaks, first the Z550 and then the Z 1000 J. great bikes!

let us know when you find something

check out the thread about loeftover bikes that are still new. Probably get a great deal there, plus it would be a new bike with warranty, not that a honda needs one....

Hey Steve. Welcome aboard. Whereabouts in North Jersey? I'm in Mt. Olive (by Hackettstown). Good luck in your search. I think you can do quite well with that budget.

Mines a 2000 and your looking at a later model, but if you ever wanted to hook up somewhere to get an idea on this model versus the 2003-04, let me know.
