now I have 18 volts!!!

    Replaced my R/R and stator last month due to the usual troubles. Installed a voltmeter and everything was fine (14.4V running down the road). I look down this morning and the darn thing's between 17 and 18.4V!! Clutch it down to idle and it drops back to where it belongs. Back in the revs and up it goes again to 18V. Parked it for ten minutes cooldown and it was back to normal. Is my R/R acting up again??

    It sure sounds like it. The regulator should be clipping that voltage down into the 14V range. You do have the voltmeter installed downstream of the R/R, correct?

    Installed a Honda R/R. All better now. The aftermarket one was less $$ but didn't last.

    Yes, voltmeter is downstream of R/R. Upstream of R/R is AC if I understand it correctly. i wonder what my 12VDC voltmeter would think of that?!!
