Computer help and advice, please.....

My old Gateway E-4200 is getting slower and slower in processing. Is there any way to clear stuff ( zeros and ones, i guess?) out to speed it up ??? The tall part makes noises like it's popping little tiny popcorn in there !

And another thing, when i go to get my Yahoo emails i now need to go through 2 extra pages ("your log-in session has expired" and a main page with news summaries) that didn't used to be there ....

you can try deleting cookies and temporary internet files and see if that helps. could also be that you are low on space.

if you're running xp and it is an older machine and you have applied all the service pack and updates... you could probably be in serious need of an upgrade for your ram. you can pick it up cheap online these days.

I do have the "xp" setup.

 

You can go to your "my computer" and click once on your c: drive to see how much is used and how much you have remaining. If you still have 15% or more you can run a defragmentation by right clicking going to tools and running it, which will never hurt. Also there is a program called System Mechanic which will do what some people charge your for at computer stores by optimizing and getting rid of uneeded materials. Yahoo just uploaded a new version so that is prolly what is going on there. Hope this helps

This may help....

If you are running XP with Explorer.

Try going to "Start" - "All Programs" - "Windows update"

With Explorer open try finding the “safety” drop down menu and use "delete browsing history".

I am not an IT genius by any stretch, but that helps keep mine operating.

Always a chance that you could have a lot of adware/spyware on your machine. I would recommend running malware bytes after installing that here as well

I do use the malware bytes, and have known of several others talk about the other two tools.

But, Reg is correct in saying that a PC needs to be just reimaged every couple of years, just to keeep things running smoothly....
