So I am getting pretty far in my teardown and recondition of my new to me 87 VFR700F2.

What are some things I should plan on replacing vs. repairing or just cleaning up.

As I removed the wiring harness there are a number of wires that are either frayed or spliced. I plan on replacing that. It needed a new fuel pump before I started all this so I am getting another one for sure. What else should I be looking for?

The bike has 61,000 miles on it. What about the clutch? Replace it while I'm in there? I plan on rebuilding the carbs. I already called the honda shop to take in the heads to have the valves checked.

It seems like most of the work is cosmetic so a lot of time will be spent on cleaning and repainting stuff.

It seems like I am rambeling a bit... Sorry about that, getting late. I am open to suggestions and appreciate everyones input.

    TIA!!!

Good luck on the rebuild. Keep us posted as it comes along. Several guys on here will be able to answer your questions concerning that bike specifically as I've never worked on one.

Concerning the clutch, that can depend on a number of factors, several of which depend on the history of the bike. Did it sit for a very long time? Has it had a new clutch in the last 20k miles? Did it run before you tore her down and if so did the clutch slip at all?

It is something I would certainly consider greatly if I were doing a deep teardown and rebuild/recondition. No more than a clutch is and no more difficult than it is to install, I would probably do it for piece of mind unless I definitively knew the clutch was in great shape.

Just started to get in to vfr's so carnt realy help. Only advice i can give is to get as much history on the bike as possible. High miles dosent mean its a dog, i average 2000 miles a month at the moment. If its previous owner serviced it regulary and looked after it then maybe you might not have as much work as you think.

Well, obviously replace all the fluids - brake/clutch/coolant/motor and fork oil/check fork parts for wear, etc.

Check your steering & wheel bearings, and suspension linkages too.

    Sorry TC!!! See below!!!

Before I get to the pictures I do know that the bike was raced for a little while so replacing the clutch would probably be a great idea. Normal wear items are getting done for sure, brake pads and rotors, rubber hoses and tubing etc...

How hard is it to rebuild the carbs?

Here is what I started with:

JUST a suggestion: do not open up the engine except for valve adjustment. Do not remove any parts from the engine. Ride the bike b4 you decide what it needs.

do a compression or leak-down test to determine internal condition and DO NOTHING unless compression is below about 140 psi or much less in one cylinder.

Those are both great suggestions. My goal is to clean it up and only do what is needed. Part of the problem is that the previous owner started to try to restore it. For example, the boots between the carbs and the engine dont have any clamps on them.
Plus there are a couple of things that worry me, like the left side engine case has some weird goop on it that looks like it may be on there to stop a minor leak. Hopefully it's just a gasket but who knows till I get in there.
I am taking my time with this because I want to do it right. This is not my primary bike and I have wanted to do a project like this for a long time.
Please keep the suggestions comming. I cant tell you how much I appreciate the input.

well if you want to do a rebuild then do the whole bike.. in motocross a rebuild would be the same as street i assume.. so grease and replace all bushings and bearings headset, swingarm, linkage, change shock oils front rear, change brake fluid, clutchfluid, clutch plates springs basket, new gasket clutch cover,do compression check then valve adjustment, new brake pads, check rotors, chain and sprokets, tires, airfilter, oil oilfilter, sparkplugs, wires all, f it buy a new bike im tired of typing...

`You do not need to rebuild the carbs. Just remove the float bowl and instal a new needle jet and make sure the idle jet is not clogged from sitting around. Thats it.

It is not all or nothing. Sometimes the float levels can be off from rubber tip
debris clogging up, and float level can be low.

Looks like a Chuck Crites brace job on the swinger. Check the underside of the brace for chain contact, another member had that issue with one of his arms once.

    swing arm

Hi from the uk! The swing arm is the correct one but has been braced! looks like lots of race mods have been done to your bike ! ie wheels, rear brake, front mudguard (sorry fender!) rear sets,(foot pegs) plus other bits, it looks superb in blue. are you wanting to return to stock ? anyway I have just finished a rebuild on a 1986 fg model the engine had done well over 40k all I did was clean it and put new oil and water in, it runs like a dream! by far the bigest problem for me was finding good bodywork, keep us posted on progress , you will love it when its done,
    chris

All that plastic stuff for motorcycles is VERY hard to find.

    I hate plastic parts.

    A little update...

Last week I shipped my forks and shock off to GP Suspension to be rebuilt. They arrived today so hopefully they will get them back to me soon.

I also dropped off my engine to a local shop to do a valve check and comperssion check as well as a few other misc. items.

I am almost done cleaning the frame so hopefully by the time I finish with that I will get the engine back and can start putting everything back together again.

My shopping list keeps getting longer and longer as I get into taking everything apart. Should be really nice when I am done! I wont make too much progress this weekend because I am going on a 4 day motorcycle ride. Should be a nice weekend for it.

I will have more pictures in the coming weeks as I get things back together.....
