After many years without a VFR, I am back. I'm back the hard way but what the heck...
Background: Second bike I owned was a VFR700F2. Sold that and a few years later bought a 2001 VFR800. Crashed that. Bought an FZ1, then a Honda Magna, and last year I finally bought a bike I had wanted for a really long time, a 2007 Yamaha FJR1300. I have been having a blast on that bike. Great for long trips or around town. By the way, I have been riding for 19 years so those are pretty spread out....
But as I am sure many of you can relate to, I never got the VFR out of my head. I knew someday I would have another. And I always lusted after the 87 VFR700. Not really sure why. It was a great bike when I had it and being a 700 makes it pretty unique.
Well the other day I came across one on craigslist. Definately a project bike. That's why I say I'm back the hard way...
    Here is what I know:
The guy I bought it from bought it to restore it. Life happened so he decided to sell it. It has a little over 61,000 miles on it. It was raced for a couple of years by a girl here in town. It has a yoshimura pipe and Fox Racing rear shock. And it needs a crapload of work. It does turn over but there was no gas in the tank so it did not start up. Supposedly it does run well. Only time will tell.
The good news is I only paid $500 for it. So in the worst case of it not running then I can probably part it out to recover my inital investment. Best case is that it does run and life is good. I will try to get it running this weekend before I totally tear it down....
If it does run then I will completly tear it down and get it back into showroom shape. Then I will ride the heck out of it. I am sure it will take me a while but I am really looking forward to it. The before and after pictures will be pretty dramatic.
Well here are a couple of pictures. It is worse than it looks. But it will look a lot better in the near future!!

I am sure I will be around a lot more to ask questions and get advice.

    TIA!!!

Sounds like a nice winter job.

Before firing it up the first thing I would check for

is rust in the gas tank.

Keep us posted on your progress and good luck.

Sweet. Glad to see an old blue coming back online. Any idea what the front end and rear wheel are off of? Nice exhaust also. I have the same on mine. It makes it a little snottier sounding without pissing off the neighbors. Good luck with the resurrection. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Welcome back. The frame and body look to be worth the 500 alone. A running motor would be a bonus.

Yeah, blue is my favorite. Definatley staying stock with the paint job. I am not sure about the wheels. Once I get them taken off and cleaned up I will let you know.

Success!! I did get the motor running for a couple of minutes. Ran rough but at least it ran!! Now I feel better about tearing it all apart to get it cleaned up. I would have been upset to do all the required work only to have a non running VFR... But no worries. Next step tear down!!
