No Carb Repair Kit

    Hello,
    My bike is going through more fuel than its supposed to,think its something to do with the carbs.Mech told me my jets may be too wide ir something??? Cant get my hands on a carb repair kit (if you look for me on the member map you'll know why). Are there any specific carb parts i can change instead of getting the whole repair kit? Or anything i can do to the existing ones?

    carb problem??

    what do your sparkplugs look like?? dark or light black?? check for dirty air filter (you surely have lots of dusty roads there), which will cause a too-rich condition. also be aware that as carb setups age and wear the float levels may rise and cause a too rich condition. even changing to new plugs could cure your problem, but check your float level (fuel level) also.

    Honda does not make a "repair kit" that I'm aware of. You can only order specific parts as they are required.

    There is a chance that your carbs are not jetted correctly, which will result in increased fuel comsumption. Usually the jets do not get replaced unless and aftermarket airfilter or exhaust system are installed. If your bike is stock, then most likely you have stock jets, only removal of the carburetors and disasembly will answer that question. Blockage of the air passages inside the carburetor bodies or incorrect float levels (as squirrelman noted) can also affect fuel mixture. A simple thing like a misadjusted choke can also give you these results.

    If the bike has always been this way, it may be set up wrong (wrong jets) but if it just started to do this, you likely have running issues as well and something is broken.

    You will systematically have to check everything till you eliminate all the possibilities as several problems can contribute to poor fuel economy and poor running.

    Invest in a carb teardown and cleaning and have the carbs balanced / tuned. They will check the jet sizes at that time and return to stock sizes if you desire and if they will work properly with the way your bike is set up.

    Teardown and clean would be first on my list. Change the fuel filter while your at it. If you open your carbs, check the needles and jets. If your float needles are dirty with fuel laquer from poor storage or bad gas they may be hanging up and making you run rich. If your jets look like they have been drilled & oversized by a previous yahoo owner for more fuel delivery, you may be getting too much.
    I remember your previous choke question. Sounded like you had to set the choke for proper running. All your symptoms point to bad fuel:air ratios. I'd be getting a pro involved if I didn't see anything obvious on the carbs.

    other things can contribute to poor fuel mileage, like bad chain, dragging brake pads, low cylinder compression, underinflated tyres, bad quality fuel, among others..............

    There's a store on Ebay called "Classic Cycle Parts". You can find it under the Motorcycle Parts section. They regularly advertise carb rebuild kits for 1st gen V4's. Try looking there. Cheers.:biggrin:
