Heres the deal. Found a 1985 VF1000R for sale locally cheap with a note saying looking to trade for a smaller sport bike. the R has some issues, dead battery guy says it needs a starter, and of course seller has 0 paper work for the bike. The paper work thing is always a pain getting a bike registered. I figured I would email him on a trade for my 85 700F. Guy says hes interested......... figured I would go take a look.

Issue I am running into is should I bother, While the R is a great bike I would loose my running bike for a project. And I have a parts bike already for the 700f (which is i a 1983 vf750f that I tore down and put in boxes and tossed the frame to the scrap yard) I attached a picture of the R.

IF he can get all the paperwork, a starter from a F or R will work, maybe even from a 750 (Jamie, where are you?). So its possible.

Want to take on a non-runner for a runner. Maybe, winter is coming in the north.

Me. I like 1KR's, but parts can be a little difficult.

Straight up, Yes, I'd do it. But they are very different bikes.

the problem here is thats its not a runner. who knows what other problems could lurk within. you really need to know that theres no major mechanicals with it, which means you need to hear it going, feel it going etc..

could turn into a money pit????

and no paper work..more stuff to do.

id say thanks...but NO thanks....your 700 is a great bike, keep it.

Hard to tell from that pic but it looks pretty good. If the body work is good and not cracked, and the motor is sound it will have more value than the 700 in the long run. Need to hear it run though for any knocking, check 2nd gear, leaks, etc.

Starters from the 3rd gen VFR ('90-'93) will work, I have one in my R. I'd bet most of the V4 starters are interchangeable.
