Remus exhaust + BMC filter = holy SHI....!

The night is a cool 75 degrees, its a beautiful night for a ride here in Vegas. I just installed the new BMC air filter in my 06, and disabled the flapper door with a vaccuum plug on the line that connects to it. This, paired with my new Remus Titanium exhaust setup, I was actually expecting possibly ill side-effects, hiccups, or otherwise naughty behavior from the engine, mainly because I officially jacked with the airflow and thus possibly the fuel enrichment on the bike, compared to stock. At the time, I don't have a power commander, or really anything to resettle the system. Turns out, I may not have to!

The startup and warming idle procedure went perfectly, with no sputtering or dying. The engine sounded healthy, so I went ahead and took a nice ride through the city, and I think I've found the ideal setup for those who don't like to fool with fuel enrichment! First off, the bike was WAAAAY faster. It had virtually none of the bogginess that the stock bike can sometimes have, and it really wanted to pull hard all the time. It was loud, especially the exhaust (Remus sound is intoxicating), and the intake was very audible. I've done the flapper door mod before, but with the stock filter, and stock exhaust. To me, that just made a noiser bike, with no power or smoothness gains. However, with the exhaust and intake done, the flapper door mod now makes sense!

All in all, I highly reccomend this setup! The BMC air filter looks a lot like a K&N, hell it might be one. The exhaust is friggin fantastic, and the final product of it all is one that a VFR enthusiast can be proud of. The bike had a lot more pull, and it wanted to lift the front tire (and did so on a few occasions) really anytime I punched it in first, second, and sometimes third gear, depending on my RPM and the amount of right twist.

Can you list up the time and money involved with your project? and was that
a FULL remus exhaust or a slip on?

 

Why the BMC over the K&N? I see K&N is about $10 cheaper all over the internet. Is BMC supposed to be way better? My paper filter is probably dead already with all this damn dust in the air so it's time to upgrade.

SCSwat: working on sound clips...I've got about twenty small 30 second clips that I'm trying to compile together, because they were taken with my phone on audio-record mode, and they aren't so good! Also, I am compiling the audio from the (poorly done) video that I recorded as well. Its mostly just wind noise and a lot of ruffling, but there are a few moments of good "vrooom" noise. The Remus system was the one listed on www.sporttour.com, and is a great setup. Some of my work is posted in my other thread here. The system is a slip-on for a gen6, and replaces the Y pipe and the mufflers. Weighs 10 lbs altogether in the Titanium model, the stock weighs 20.


canib: ditto for you on the sound clips, and I'm going to get in contact with you in the next few weeks so I can get out and ride in those twisties you menetioned. I usually just get out to the red-rock area, or the hoover dam area myself. I'm waiting for a little money to flow my way so I can put my new tires on, and I'm also waiting for the time to install my heli-bars. Oh, with regard to the K&N vs. anybody else debate, I don't really have a reason to go with BMC other then K&N has had some bad press on motorcycle filters, and their quality seems to be wavering. BMC looks just like the K&N, but is made in Italy, and the quality looks good. Performance is absolutely better to my seat of the pants, when combined with the new exhaust.

 

How were the Remus pipes to put on? I heard that they can be a bugger to get lined up. Great writeup I will have to try this setup. Thanks...

 

A little tricky to line up, I just went at it with the most sensible approach I could think of, which is to leave most of the connections loose, and slowly tighten everything up and adjust each time. Worked! The hardest part is getting the cans to rotate to exactly the right angle, and I am off a degree or so, but I'm riding, and I don't see the pipes, I just hear them. I'll let others comment on pipe angle from BEHIND me.

My first impression of the 6th gen VFR was that with stock pipes it sounded
like a Corvette wrapped in cellophane!

 

Is there any FI re-mapping with the Remus pipes?

my bike is stock on mapping. Like I said, the drivability seems to be great with the BMC filter / Remus exhaust / flapper door disable combo. Your mileage may vary!

Speaking of mileage, I got 20 miles better on my last tank of fuel with this mod...impressive!

exactly! I was shocked on the mileage increase too, but hey, there I was, fueling up at the gas station, and when I entered my mileage and the gas I added to the tank (before hitting the filler neckline) to my log I keep on my phone in the notes section (a really good idea, IMO!), I realized that I added 4.5 gals of gas, and traveled about 187 miles. Translation, 41.55 mpg. On my notes before, I could erk about 38-39 mpg, tops. I believe a more free-breathing engine can reduce pumping losses, and thus save on efficiency. It is worth noting that my compression braking techniques had to change though, because the engine braking isn't as effective as it once was.

To emphasize the changes this mod combo makes, I brought the bike back to the shop that repaired it back to stock (Carter Powersports, LV, NV) after I replaced the exhaust, filter, and all that. I was there for misc. grips and such, and while I was there, the service guy who assisted me before AND onlookers were fully impressed at the new growl of the VFR. Importantly, the service guy was shocked at the increase in rev response! He questioned me on how the hell I managed to make the engine snap-rev like a 600 does. He was impressed as hell.

They also have a used 04 VFR with the LASER exhaust setup on it, and he made a suprising comment to me. He said that my bike sounds 1,000 times better then the used one they have, and a million times better then stock. I think he might be stretching his exageration a bit on that last part, but it was his words, not mine. As he continued to twist the grip, a couple of store guests, a manager, a few co-workers, all converged on the bike in admiration. I was very pleased.

I have recorded about 10 minutes of audio and some video of the bike, but its mostly wind. I'm working on placement of the camera on the bike, but it is slow going, and tedious work. I have great clips of it standing and revving, but thats not as exciting as a full run through the mountains. So, patience please! I have a co-worker who is a music producer and he is planning on bringing a high-end long throw mic to work, with a quality USB-to-mic hookup, so we can record some flybys.

Oh yeah, and to answer WHY I chose Remus, I did it at the suggestion of www.sporttour.com (which is where I bought it), who was out of Staintune at the moment, and seemed to have good luck with Remus as a brand. Glen suggested them, and I went Titanium after a little deliberation and research. The Staintune was my first pick initially, but only because I didn't know what Remus was about. After a little research, finding out they are from Austria and made there, I chose them. Austria is where my favorite gun, the Gaston Glock, is made. QUALITY!! They have it. Instructions suck, but on the web you can find a great user-made manual in pdf format. I'll dig later at home for the website. I chose against carbon fiber, btw, because of the remote possiblity of the bike being dropped again from vandalism. I figured carbon fiber would shatter or crush, and titanium would barely scratch.
As for pics, TONIGHT I plan on riding provided the wind stays under 20mph (right now it is gusting 40+), but I'll take pics regardless and post. Promise.

I'm excited about what you have stated from your filter, exhaust. and flapper door mod. It makes me want to do the same to my 04. The price of the remus is about the same as the staintune isnt it? I unforntunately still have stock exhaust on my bike. But hopefully this winter I will be able to save the money to do what you've done to the exhaust and filter. If I get about the same feeling from the bike that you did I will be very pleased:biggrin: Thanks for the info

 

welcome! btw the polished aluminum Remus is way cheaper then the titanium or carbon. As observed from the sporttour website, $695 is the going cost of polished aluminum, and $779 for Carbon or Titanium. Staintune is $809 at sporttour.

It is worth mentioning that the shipping time from order to in my hand was 2 days...well more like 42 hours. Stunning! They come directly from maxmoto, if you want to cut out the middleman, but Sporttour charges exactly the same price as maxmoto, so its moot,...Sporttour also got my money on the Throttlemeisters and Helibars I installed.

 

great minds think alike! saw the new remus? its four pipes..juz like laser pipes

 

I've checked soundclips of some Remus before and liked the sound. I recently found out that Scorpion CF cans have been discontinued, so I'm looking for CF's that not only look good, but sound great and are reliable.

Were there any baffles to remove on your Remus? I know a lot of people like to remove their baffles for louder cans, I'd be one of them.

Was there any kind of warranty on them?
