    fuel pump

If your asking if you can run without fuel pump the answer is no. You must run with a fuel pump , the tubes inside the fuel tank run up to petcock and prevents gravity feed below about a thirdof a tank.Whats wrong with your fuel pump?

    relay

The fuel pump only fires while the engine is turning so dont think all is lost if it does not fire with just the key on.

like he said, it doesent work unless the engine works.

he also taught me this, pull the plug and jump the 2 wires to a battery. this will tell you if it is working or not.

also keep this in mind. the engine will not run unless there is fuel already in the carbs. but without the engine running there isent enough energy to make the fuel pump pump.

so jump the 2 fuel pump wires to a battery for a few seconds untill you hear it bog down, then start the engine.

oh, also disconnect the fuel line from the tank, just to be sure the peacock isent blocked up stoping the flow of fuel.

The pump relay tends to go bad due to heat. Short the black & black/blue wire at the relay connector. This will apply power to the pump when the ignition is on. The third wire (red or yellow ?) at the relay comes from the ignition, it closes the relay circuit only when the motor is running.

I spent past two weeks diagnosing this problem on my 87vfr700. Thought it was the pump but it was the relay.
