Well as many of you know from my previous postings my brother-in-law wrecked my beloved 16 year old 3rd Gen "PEARL" about a month ago
(that's what happens when you let a Harley Dude ride a real bike LOL!!!)

Anyways, I loved that bike!!! The bike had 42,000 miles on it but ran really good and was in decent overall shape that I would rate as about 8 out of 10. The damage from the wreck was all cosmetic but significant enough that I decided to report the bike to my insurance company. As expected the insurance company totalled the bike out and gave me $2800 for her which is not bad considering I paid $2600 for her. I immediately purchased the bike back from the insurance company for $500 and decided to look for used body parts to get her back into shape. While looking on Craigslist I saw on ad for another 1993 VFR that was only 30 minutes away from where I live. The ad stated that the bike didn't run but the bodywork was in very good shape. I spoke to the owner and SHE stated that the bike had not run since she bought it more than 2 years ago but the bodywork was in excellent shape. She wanted $2000 for the bike which I thought was a little steep considering that it didn't run but I decided to go check it out in hopes that I could negotiate a better price and part out whatever pieces were left over after rebuilding "Pearl"

I showed up to check out the bike and was met by the 40+ year old mother of 3 who had purchased the bike a couple of years ago but never got around to getting her license and learning to ride. She led me down to her basement where the bike had been sitting for the past few years and that is where I met my new love "LUCY"

As it turns out Lucy only has 9500 miles on her and is in cherry condition. The engine, headers, hoses, body plastics, and electrical wiring look brand spanking new and it is obvious that the bike has not been ridden much during it's life. The bad news is that she would not start and was leaking oil from both the engine and the front left fork. The engine would turn over and she sounded like she wanted to start but she would only cough a bit and then backfire. Because the bike was in such great condition otherwise I decided to roll the dice and buy her anyways. I immediately abandoned the idea of rebuilding "Pearl" and instead decided to focus my efforts on getting the new bike running and figured that I could easily pull parts from my other 3rd Gen as needed since it still runs fine. The owner was firm in her price and she received $2000 cash from me. I wasn't too upset since I could easily part the bike for what I paid for it and it came with some nice extras (Carbon Fiber Rear Tire Hugger/Chain Guard, Brand New Michelin Pilot Roads, Brand New Chain and Sprocket, HID Headlights, Brand New K&N Filter, Steel Brake Lines, Vance and Hines Exhaust, 2 Seats (1 black / 1 gray with seat cowl)

A few days later I contacted a good friend of mine from work who is also a bike fanatic and wrenches bikes on the side. He told me that he would take a look at the bike and only charge me $20/hr labor so I dropped the bike at his house last week. After waiting anxiously for a week he called me Sunday to let me know the bike was ready. It turns out the oil leak from the engine was coming from a faulty gasket on the ride side engine case and the fork seals were just old and dry and needed to be replaced. He replaced the engine gasket, rebuilt both forks, removed and cleaned all the carbs and jets, changed all fluids and spark plugs, checked all electrical components, and got her running like brand new. He couldn't believe how good condition a bike that old was and commented several times about how unbelievable clean the engine was and how smooth the bike was. Anyways he only charged me $300 and now I have a practically new 3rd Gen with less that 10,000 miles on it!!! The best part is that my old 3rd Gen still runs fine and other than the plastics she still has plenty of good parts that I can sell for some extra cash. I'm so stoked about the whole things and can't wait to get the tag for her so I can take her for a proper run up to the North GA mountains. I'll post some pics of "LUCY" once I get all the dust and grime off her and get her fairings mounted back. Well they say that good things happen to good people right? Well I just proved that good things also happen to sum' bitches LOL!! I love 16 year olds (VFR's that is you freaking perverts)

    Regards,
    Rollin

What have we learned here? If your bike is getting old just let your relative harley rider take it for a spin!

LOL, I'm looking forward to seeing her running! Do you think she can handle cherohala and the dragon?

    Very cool story, Rollin'.

Hey, I never knew that you could buy a bike/car back from the very insurance company that just paid you to write it off!

Do they not hate that? Would your premiums not skyrocket?

Way to go Sy! Just move your tag from the 6th gen over to the 3rd gen and ride it down to Twains on Thursday night - police will never know!

Can you rebuild the wrecked one and re-title it and sell it??

I picked up my new tag this morning. The old bike still runs but will need almost all new plastics. The left side was damaged the worst but the impact from the crash pretty much broke all the tabs and mounting point on the right side as well. The bike would have to go through State Inspection before they will issue a new tag for it since it is now a salvage. I'm either going to sell the pieces to someone who needs them more than me or just turn the bike into a track bike. I'm leaning toward selling the pieces because it will help me recover some of the insurance deductable and I seriously think my wife will kill me if I don't get rid of the 3rd Bike in our garage right now.

    Regards,
    Rollin
