Looking at an 84' VF1000F with 21k miles.

Guy owned the bike for 2 years, but is looking for a cruiser.

She's pretty darn clean except some stupid decals he put on.....They do come off.

She's all original except the mufflers, but he's throwing in the OEM minty mufflers.

    So, heres my check list:

    1. Check for ticking and rattling noise from top end to the bottom.
    2. Pull a plug for the condition of the mixture.
    3. check charging system.
4 Roll on 2nd gear and punch it to see if 2nd jumps out.
    5. Check for leaks.
    6. Take pressure off handle bars at slow speed to see how the tires and frame are aligned.

    7. Check rear shock for air leak.

Does this check list sound pretty good?

I'm bring my stethoscope to check for engine noises too.

Is it worth $1900 or OBO??

He also put new tires and new chain.

Checking it out tomorrow morning and any replies would be appreciated.

    -LL

P.S. How much is carb gasket kits and where can I get some??

Double check the DMV papers to make sure this does not have a "Salvage" title.

Usually when people put decals on, in strange places, it's to hide dings from a crash.

    Buyer beware and..........good luck.

No bike for a new rider.....

"Buy the newest bike you can afford" is the advice i got as a new rider, and i pass that wisdom along. That's an old bike, and the technical progress over the years has left in looking liker a dinosaur with weak suspension and brakes & narrow wheels.

That bike is NOT suitable for a new rider !!!!!!!!

Way too heavy, too hard to get parts for, too powerful for anyone without lots of riding experience, but mostly too heavy.

Bad transmissions are common on those bikes, repair parts nearly unavailable.

If the 1000 had the same upper-end oiling problems as the 700/750 engine, the bike might have damaged cams.........

squirrelman dude, sorry for the confusion.

    I've been riding and wrenching since I was 8. : )

I'm just new to buying a Vf1000....Kinda forgot what to look for since it's been a really long time I've looked at buying Any bike.

And I'll just ignore what you said about the VF1000. I'd rather ride old than new....women included!!!!

Well, either I go at 5 pm to look her over, or continue looking for my dream bike...VFR1000R.

    Tough decision.....

    LOL!!

    My bad:biggrin:

When you can type 65 words per minute, you sometimes misspell:biggrin:

Hey Matt, just wanted to say sorry for not getting those measurements on the rear cowl bracket to you in time.

My new job isn't going so well...still looking for other work.

But I must say, you did a superb job on the viffer. You attention to detail is impeccable!!!!

    Cheers,
    -LL

P.S. Any other things to check on this beast??

As long as the bottom end is good and the suspension was taken care of it is probably a good by. I am probably late on this thread but I have the exact bike vf1000f for about 7 years now. It was in the low teens then and about 24k now but starts and runs like a new bike. It is a beast in a stright line. I am debating selling mine or upgrading the forks, swing arm, tires, etc. I have riden it in some serious storms where there where not even any cars on the road and it never let me down. Do like the v4.

So did you get it? Being a single year import in the US parts are hard to find. Where are you located?
