I thought i read something on here a few nights ago about air box modifications but I can not seem to find it now.

Is this something that can and should be done? If So, are there any link on here discussing it?

    Thanks,

you might try searching using the term "desnorkel" or "snorkel". As for whether it should be done or not I cannot say, but it most likely is not something I would do. But it is each owners decision on what they do to their machines.

I heard that "desnorkeling" messes up mid range and makes on/off throttle transitions more pronounced. No thanks for me..

Somewhere on the site someone posted a dyno comparison of snorkel on/snorkel off runs. Bugger all difference really - I reckon carrying extra change in your pocket would negate the value.

I de-snorkeled for awhile but decided to replace it 'cos the extra induction noise was getting a bit tiresome and taking away from the exhaust note.

I have been playing with this (on an 06 VFR) for a while, and come to the following conclusions:

The removal of the snorkel doesn't do much.

The plugging of the vaccuum line and subsequent disabling of the extra valve in the intake box makes a strange difference in the bike. It sounds a LOT louder, and more pissed off, but the engine will stumble sometimes. Also, it makes no real performance change, but you can always restore it, so play around if you like.

Now, I've been fooling with a possible ram-air setup for my 06, using a fiberglass snorkel that works under the fuel tank, grabbing air from the frame openings...

I've been toying with the idea of replacing the front blinkers with ram air vents, but haven't had the front fairings off so don't know if there's a route from there to the snrokles.

Stoopid question: Does ram air effect fuel injection? With more air does the computer (PCIIIusb for me) compensate by tossing in more gas?

I de-snorked my'02 and found just the opposite to be true for me. I ended up with much smoother low rpm throttle response and better low to mid range whack when rolling on the throttle from 2800rpm and up. Of course the extra induction noise isn't for everyone but it doesn't bother me too much for now and I did keep the snorkle in case I change my mind. I didn't disable the vacuum servo controlled secondary air door. I figured I'd leave that alone for the ECU to control. I have also considered the possibilty of a duct running to the box and thought I might look at a Kawi ZZR600 or ZX9 for inspiration. Currently, the only other mods to my '02 are a K&N air filter and semi-punched out factory cans.

I decided to leave the snorkel as-is, but disable the flapper door, and that in conjunction with the BMC air filter, and Remus exhaust all seems to be a great combination.

I would say that it is possible to get better performance out of the stock airbox, but it seems it only happens when you change the exhaust as well. Makes sense, in the end!

Found this site many months before I bought my Viffer and was toying with the idea of getting a ZX9. Gives some good dope on Ram air and what a difference it can make.

Question I would be wanting answered is whether the ECU would compensate when the air/fuel mixture starts leaning out.
