I'm not getting fuel to the engine, and I think I've found why. Attached is a pic of the fuel pump contacts (top of the unit, under the black rubber cap). The center section of the relay looks like it's broken. My questions: - does anyone know what this is supposed to look like? Does the center arm connect to the upper contact? - Someone mentioned airlock being a problem for the pump. How do you go about purging the pump if that's the problem? Thanks!
This is a common problem on these pumps, the filter gets blocked leading to the pump working harder which causes the pump contacts to burn and then stick together. This stops the pump, dressing up the contact faces and replacing the filter can effect a repair if this doesn't work the only solution is to replace the pump at a cost of ohmigod. Hope this helps and good luck.
if you can actually find a replacement pump... I can not find one for my 1985 vf1000R mine leaks badly.. and I have tried a coupld of ways to run it with out a pump... just does not work...
Try to clean the contacts as vifferj suggested, but you must be very, extremely, incredibly light-fingered cuz those parts are very easiy bent. just side some sandpaper in and out between the contacts but don't bend the fragile contact that floats on the copper-colored spring. the lower contact on the long arm should be touching the upper contact . look for the top of the shaft in the exact center of the device, spray some WD-40 down the hole, grab the top of the shaft with pliers and carefully pull it up about 2-3mm or just enough to see it move. air lock is NOT a problem with these pumps, but slow or obstructed fuel flow from the tank IS a common problem, so be sure that fuel flows easily and freely TO the pump.
I just bought a replacement pump. Search the forums here for info. Differences are in size and routing of hose fittings. They have a max (shutoff) fuel pressure of 3-4psi. Some have an extra vacuum hose. They all tend to have those annoying contact points like yours. Newer motorcycles stick the fuel pump inside the tank; those won't work for you. I went with an aftermarket solid state fuel pump.

Captb - that pump may work but the orientation of the hoses is certainly different to my 90 VFR and from what I can see the unit appears longer to boot. That means rerouted fuel hoses at a minimum assuming you can make it package.
