I am looking for some advice. I have a '93 and this morning it started sputtering, lurching, and backfiring and then I pulled it over and turned it off. When I tried to turn it back on I get nothing, no lights or anything. Any clues???

sounds like the dreaded yet ever so popular fried regulator/rectifier. basically your r/r died and quit charging your battery mid ride which in turn allowed your electrical and ignition systems to drain your battery completely until that sputtering and lurking you experienced. kinda sucks huh? you can jump the battery and get a few miles out of it but it's just gonna die on you again.
the test to diagnose a bad r/r is to recharge your battery, fire up the bike and put a volt meter on your battery. if it's not getting a good 14+ volts while the bike is running, you've found your problem. now it could always be the stator as well, but most likely it's the r/r.
easily fixed for about $100 new and $30-$50 used.
i would personally get one of those 3rd party replacements "made to OEM specs" for around $100 because you can just assume the OEM r/r is just gonna die on you again.
ebay is the best source for these

chances are strong this is the case - I'm a vetran of 3 of these now......

I am told that prolonged riding with a ded R/R is one way to melt other electrical parts. I didn't explore that to see if it was true.....
