I just did a 3400 mile trip to Sturgis from San Antonio,TX. The bike ran great the first day but when I got into the Pueblo, Co. It wouldn't idle and no power until over 5500 rpm. We ran over 90 mph in Wyoming for about 50 miles and it ran ok but rich. When I got to Sturgis I put in a new set of plugs thinking I fouled the old ones with a tank of bad gas. It would idle and run good until it warmed up. I drove it this way all week and then home. I only averaged about 150 miles per tank and ran we between 80 and 90 all the way home. It is still running rich and it surges when I go down the highway. Still runs sluggish until I get to about 5500 rpm and then surges about every 5 seconds. I am up for suggestions. It now has 12000 miles on it. I bought it last year with 600. It has Leo Vince exhaust and a k&n filter that has been on it all year, never had a problem before. I changed the oil and filter before I left. I also checked the filter and it is clean.

I told the guy at the Honda Dealership that it was running like a Harley. It was in good company 2 Gold Wings and my brothers BMW K1200s made the trip; one Harley drove but the other two rode the trailer. It was a good trip no one gave us any problems, everyone was real nice. Might have been cause we were a cops.................

    Codes?

Do you have a code showing? It sounds like a water temp sensor and is common to cars and bikes.

Download the manual, there is a plug under the right meter panel that you can jumper to see any error codes.

My guess is you have a bad fuel pressure regulator. The diaphragm inside the regulator leaks and allows raw fuel to enter the intake through the vacuum line. The symptoms are exactly what you describe. It's a common problem on the CBRs, mine went at less than 4000 miles. There is a part revision for the VFR, so I'm guessing they had a problem with them too.

It's pretty easy to test. First just run the fuel pump with the vacuum hose disconnected. If it's really bad fuel will come out of the vacuum port on the regulator. If you have a vacuum pump you can do a more thorough test. Connect the vacuum pump to the port on the regulator and pull vacuum. If it's bad it will not hold vacuum, and the pump will draw fuel. A little Mityvac hand pump will do.
