On the way home today from a friends. I decided to boggie and take the highway home. I wasn't in a real hurry just a 70-75mph kinda hurry. The four lane I was on turns into a six lane with 3 on each side of a grassy median. I just passed a busy exit and was settling down in the left lane at 75mph and about ten car lengths behind the car in front of me. Just passed a semi and several other cages. Also coming up on several cages on my right.

When all of a sudden I see this big black thing shoot out from under the car in front of me. Well lordie be gaush. It's a 6-7 foot long piece of semi tire tread. It flops up in the air about a foot and a half or so. Then folds itself in half and comes smack down in front of me perpendicular across my lane.

BUT because of my super fast reflexes and vast knowledge of counter steering, without blinking an eye. I push (flick) hard right. Bike scoots over three foot, zing by road trash, flick hard left puts me back in the center of my lane all in less than a second . I never left my lane, touched the brakes or tried to lean the bike. Just flick, flick and it's history. Except for the cager behind me about ten car lengths. Yep they ran it over.

I just got to say it's fun riding a bike and knowing how to react. I wondering if anybody behind me watching this scenario unfold had bets I was going down? They'd be losers!!

Ever have to react fast or kiss your ass goodby?

had a semi's tire blow while I was passing it... scared the ever-lovin' crap outta me... But knowin' how to counter steer, and havin' my jacket on, kept me from any serious damage...

I practice swerving around tar snakes just to be ready for that type of situation.

Indeed I have. Just the other day my wife came downstairs and asked me if the slacks she was wearing made her look fat. Man, talk about fast reaction time. The adrenaline rush was intense.

That would be a fast run to the bike or the ability to think fast.

If you had been riding a Buell, all you would've had to do was lean....

Ditto on that. Also manhole covers, painted spots, and the like. They teach this in the MSF Basic and Experienced rider courses.

I like to dodge pot holes and man hole covers  I hope I have the reflexes to miss anything like a piece of semi tire in the road. I'd hate to hit something like that!

if the road's super smooth and i can't find manhole covers or potholes to swerve around, i'll even use shadows from the trees. it's way more fun than driving straight, and for sure it's good practice!

does anyone know of a good source of those tiny squishy pylons you can ride over that they use in the training courses? i was thinking of heading over to princess auto to look but it's not super close to my house...
