This last Sunday my bike got knocked over while parked, by another rider. I got the insurance info and then had to have the bike towed to the local Honda Dealer. The tip over broke the clutch engine cover as well as the front, side and rear plastic body pieces, not to mention the front and rear brake levers, the right mirror and front windshield. Now the dealer came up with a price of 3800 dollars to fix the bike. Does this seem excessive? I'm wondering if the insurance will claim the bike totaled? Please let me know if you have had this happen and how it turned out. I already miss my VFR.

my insurance wrote me $4800 ($4300 after deductible) to replace the left side fairing, rear fairing and front cowl, left mirror, clutch lever, shift lever, front wheel (it has minor scratches...I'm not going to replace it...) left foot peg and the passenger foot rest.

    These parts are ridiculously expensive.
I'm adding frame sliders to mine and I'm going to be paying more attention going into any turns from now on!

If you're at all mechanically inclined, download the shop manual, get the money from insurance and do the repairs yourself. Keep what they would have paid someone else in labor!
What you're looking at seems like a bit of work, but none of it is difficult.
It's all just nuts and bolts
........and tons of screws and plastic clips.....

When you take into consideration all of the parts that go along with the parts you mentioned such as fairing stays gaskets etc. as well as the labor to repalce them, that estimate seems in the ballpark. I wouldn't have been surprised of it was even higher.

My F3 got knocked over many a year ago, scuffed everything on the pipe side, including the pipe, but didn't get the tank. Bent some little piece of metal directly welded to the frame. That was $3800. I put all of the plastic on, replaced the mirror, really easy stuff. If you know how to change the oil in your bike, you can do this.

it cost $1700 for the upper fairing, left fairing, windscreen, and bar end on mine so $3800 is what it would estimate. if they total it buy it back and fix it yourself it should be easy.. Oh and don't buy the parts from the dealer. ron ayers, and a couple of other places will save you money

    Title "hickey"

One more consideration regarding insurance payouts and your motorcycle...

You'll probably have damage disclosure (hickey) on your title over this. It may drop the value of your bike when (if) you sell. State laws vary about the dollar value of damage before it gets noted on your title.

Just something to keep in mind.

If the insurance company totals the bike due to the damage you can usually buy it back from them for cheap but the bike will usually be branded on the title as a "salvage"

That is exactly what happened with my 3rd Gen (1993) two weeks ago. The bike only had cosmetic damage on the left side but since the damage exceeded the value they declared it a total. I bought it back from them for $500 and now have a parts bike for my newly acquired 3rd Gen with only 9000 miles on it.

    Regards,
    Rollin

Thanks for all of the replies. The dealer called and said the insurance will pay to fix the bike ,so all went well. I think I will call the insurance company and see if they will write the check to me. I would prefer to do the work myself.

I like doing my own work...only things I can't do (for a lack of tools...not knowledge or experience) are mount/balance tires and alignments (cars)
That way you know what quality of work went into the job and you know everything back together properly.
....not to mention the money you save!

plus, you'll probably be able to have the bike fixed sooner than if you had the dealer do it
