Looks like I have an Oil leak...and it seems to be coming from the Oil pan.

    A few questions:

-It looks like the pan has nothing keeping it from just coming right out....any difficulty with Re&Re the Oil pan?

    -Any Gaskets better than others?

    -Is Torquing the bolts necessary?

Also....do oil pans from older VF500's and 500 Magna's fit my bike?

    Bump.

Clymers manual has nothing on oil pan removal, but it lists removing the Oil pump and they say to remove the exhaust also.

Is removing the exhaust necessary to Remove and re-install the Oil Pan?

I know it was necessary on my 6th gen to drop the oil pan. Also there was no gasket on my pan, just used yamabond or the honda equivalent.

dropping the exhaust would also help keep oil from dripping on it. And we all know what that can do. :target:

Hmmm...anyone know for sure what the process is?

Looks like Bike bandit doesn't stock the gasket.

It might be possible to get the pan off without removing the exhaust, but honestly it would probably be a lot easier if you did. I usually don't mess with that sort of thing unless I'm pulling the entire engine so I can honestly say I don't think I've ever tried. Either way it shouldn't be a big deal. Dropping the exhaust is like a 15 minute process max.

Should I just undo the 2 front pipes from the head and that should be good?

Should I be getting new exhaust gaskets also?

(keeping in mind I'll be doing all this with hand tools)

You'll want to pull the whole thing, it's the large collector box that needs to get out of the way. A basic ratchet set is all that you should need. Yes, new exhaust gaskets is a good idea.

Dude, don't get so worked up. Removing the exhaust is SUPER easy. Like I mentioned, it's a 10-15 minute job.

    If you say so.

Maybe I'm making it out to be worse than it really is?

The rear pipes look difficult to get to...and Im assuming Im leaving the rear pipes attached to the head and just removing them from the collector?

I don't have a garage or a bike stand so I just wanna do this right the first time...cause knowing my luck something WILL go wrong

Yeah, it's not that bad. You are correct - leave the headpipes attached to the rear head. You can't get those off with the engine in the frame anyway. A long extension and a 14mm socket are all that's needed to loosen the pipes at the collector flange. Disconnect the muffler mounts and it drops right off.

Alrighty...I'll get the Exhaust Gaskets ordered. Maybe get some Penetrating fluid and a long ass extension.

    Thanks Jamie.

I picked up a cheap oil pan off of Ebay and it doesn't look the same as mine.

Drain plug is in a different spot.

Are the pans different between the different years of VF500's???
