    So, I've got a tank from an 86 vfr750f2 that I'm going to be using on a custom build (on my 85). It's in good shape from the outside. You could pretty much call it "mint".

    But here's the problem;

    There a fuel cap on it and I don't have the key.

    Any idea on how I can get a key for it, or at least get the cap off without destroying the cap or the tank?

    :confused:

    a locksmith can cut a key for it by "pressing" the tumblers on a blank.....it's expensive,or they can Pick the lock open, pull the mechanism apart and "rekey" both are a few bucks

    Key codes

    You will need to pick the lock....no way around it.After the tank is open there is a key code stamped in the bottom of the cap. It will end in a letter and two numbers, that is the key code. It will always be A or B for right side keys and C or D for left sided keys. Any dealer or lock smith can cut a key with that info. I you have a factory key from the early models it will have it in the side and all the locks including helmet lock (security issue) have the number on it.The code on the fuel cap is VERY small and hard to read and a key with code in hand it should be fifteen bucks to cut.:thumbsup:
