Just recently during a long distance trip with near 250km of straight road and very less traffic, a friend of mine(Fazer 1000) and I (Vfr800 vtec) decide to travel a little faster then our usual speed which is around 150km/h. As I pass the vtec opening rpm and beyond I notice the temperature begins to climb up from 98°C onwards,as our speed reaches 180km/hr the temperature hit a high of 110°C. But shouldn't the temperature be lower instead of higher when travel faster.
The air temperature is around 32°C (hot)
Beside with k&n filter no other mod is done to the my 2002 model bike
Has anyone here ever experience this before ? Is this normal ?

    Please help ............ Thanks

Sorry but the VFR is notorious for running warm. About a month ago, I did a 160 mile (266 klm) run in 95f (35c) and my VFR's temp stayed in the +220f (104c) the whole trip. Right now, I'm working up a switch to let me shut off the fan because at hwy speeds all it does was suck power. The switch will also let me keep the fan on for in city use where hopefully it'll be more effective...

you should try flushing out your coolant and replacing it with distilled water and water wetter or engine ice. has it been flushed out yet? your bike is about 7 years old now... i just changed my coolant out and replaced it with distilled water and water wetter. im very happy with the results. i did a 320 mile trip from key west to miami and back in 95 degree heat. as long as i was traveling over 50mph my temp stayed at 174*F. at lower speeds it got up to about 180*F. im also running a vtr100 fan which really helps in the 20-40mph range as it blows in the opposite direction which is the natural flow of the bike at speed. if your bike is running too hot to let the fans kick off(above 210*F) this REALLY helps at higher speeds.

I may have to try Water Wetter because in Alabama, the VFR stays in the 190-200 range
during the summer and I'm not too crazy about it...

Your bike is running lean, because that is the way its set at the factory and a k&n
air filter will make it run that much leaner. As described by our other members,I believe thats in the right direction as far as what they recomended. I would also think about running a power commander ,when programed properly it will correct air /fuel ratio and make the engine run cooler. eddie

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:how does the fan(eletric suck power at highway speeds??????) just pee in your radiator it will help if not maybe you can make up a short story about your pee experience..or you could just take off the lower fairings and try to look as cool as a cool fz1 plenty of choices today...

If the fan's running and not doing anything for the bike's temp then it's sucking electricity. As for your other ideas, piss off.

    my mistake
I done the flushing of the coolen system a week before the long trip up
and using maxima coolen pre-mixed ready.
    should I go for engine-ice instead ?

yeah i would go with engine ice. i have redline water wetter with distilled water and no coolant in mine. i love it, but the lack of boilover protection kinda scares me.

+1 on Redline Water Wetter. My personal mix is 15% coolant, 85% water + 8oz of water wetter.

Glad to hear the thermostat solved the problem!

In answer to your question of shouldn't a higher speed make the engine run cooler the answer is yes and no. At very slow speed (below ~30 mph) the answer is yes; you are increasing air flow through the radiators and not pulling any appreciable power to generate more heat. At high speeds the engine heat being rejected into the coolant increases faster than the cooling capacity does with the increased air flow to the rad, so it's not unusual to see the coolant temp rise. The power required rises as the cube of the bike speed; at high velocity the heat generated climbs pretty #$&! steeply.

    Stay cool!
