Hello. Does anyone have any feedback on the gas mileage on a 1998 VTR? I got a lead on one at a really good price but I heard they suck on gas. Want it for commuting mostly

if VTR1000 then YES! the gas millage is one of the worst since it has the biggest 2 carbs on production motorcycle.
In addition if your weight is above 155lb then the front springs need to be replaced by firmer one.I test rode one stock I am 170 and even on minor breaking the front just dives. Not safe at all.In emergency situation front will buckle under you easily.

Under then that it has great twin music other then Ducati.

Ihad an 06 VTR and the fuel economy wasnt too bad as long as you take it steady, but if you gas it you will get down to 13 Kms / litre.
Most of the time I got 16 Ks / litre (My VFR does 18.5 Ks/litre)
The front springs were improved on models after 02.

I think the small gas tank (4.2 gals) is more the problem than the actual mileage. If you get 16kms per liter that dogman mentioned that works out to almost 38 MPG(US). Not bad!

I had a VTR1000 before I brought my VFR800,and the VTR was a pain in butt in many ways.
First the small fuel tank, the front calipers are the worst I have ever had,the stock gearing is all wrong, and the pressure on the wrists is high, crap front suspension.crappy small buttons/controls.Bad seat.
But the good parts are:awesome sound(add some pipes)awesome grunt, quite alot of bike for the money.

    That`s my take on it.

Yeah the fuel tank is actually smaller than stated, the 19 litre is about 17.5 and the 16 litre is about 14.5 (useable)
The front brakes are much improved with EBC HH pads, or Gixxer or CBR calipers.
A lot of people change the sprocket gearing, as they do on the VFR. I found it OK stock.
They still represent good bang for buck, but discontinued now.
A simple, cheap bike, but watch the ccts, a failed cct = disaster.

I ride a VTR every day, so I am well aware of the fuel econmy situation with those bikes. I get 36-37 and that's pretty much it. I've gotten over 40 with lots of Interstate. And then there was that time I got 25.....

My nephew has a VTR1000 superhawk , D &D exhaust, carb kits and when we are riding at a fast pace through the twisties and open long stretches he goes through two tanks of gas to my one tank with my VFR.
