    Hi,

I'm living in Maine currently and am thinking of moving to the SD area; would any of you happen to live (or have lived) there? If so, could you give me a quick opinion of the area, i.e. jobs outlook, housing, crime, etc.? Naturally, the city's website describes living there as nirvana, like all chambers of commerce say...

I know the weather is great but that's not always everything. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Joe

Good things: Lots of activities, great roads to ride, great weather, ole Mex is 20 mins away, and lots of :stripper: :stripper: as well!

Bad things: Cost of living, traffic, ole Mex is 20 mins away, and rapid increase of population. Crime is not too bad, unless you live in certain cities/areas....or closer to the border.

Jobs are a little tough to come by right now, but it all depends on what you do. If you are a drug runner, then TJ will keep you busy for years to come...if you don't end up :hangme: They have called San Diego an area with a "sunshine tax"....because employers may/can sometimes pay you less than certain other cities because the location/style of living is so favorable.

Long already gave you a link for our SCAR group.

Thanks to both for the input. After 49 years I've reached my limit with Maine weather; beautiful for 4 months out of the year but when December/January come and it's 0 degrees out and pitch black at 4:15 in the afternoon...no more.

The area is so diverse, it's hard to say what SD is like :) Cost of living high, jobs not great.

So many, many excellent roads to ride. Great weather.

Any area in particular you are looking at?

Thanks for the welcome. When you say almost year-round driving is that due to winter rains? I usually stop riding here around early December, sometimes due to early snows but more more often from the temps; I'll do mid-40s OK but the 30s really shorten the rides.

I've spent my entire life living on the coast so the closer to the shore the better (assuming I can afford it). The average 3/4BR, 2 Bath Colonial with a 2 car garage like I own here in Southern coastal Maine is running around $225 to $275K; I'm sure SD is much higher? Just curious, are basements common in CA homes? Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. I really want to live where I don't have to put my life on hold for half the year anymore; the NE winters (as you know) are just brutal sometimes...BTW, do you miss the seasons?

Well hombre, you didn't directly ask me, so I don't know if you want this info from my :moonie: or not..

Houses (full unattached, not talking condos,) are well into the high 300's and 400's, 500's and above. As they always say, it is location, location, location. Closer proximity to the coast means higher prices for the most part. However, the economy has brought the prices down as much as 20 percent or more in some areas. Friend at work just bought a 2 bath 2 bedroom condo for $375k. Really depends on the area. If you don't might a couple "drive-by's" a week, you could get a steal I am sure!

Do miss the seasons, as in waiting 20 minutes for my car to warm up while scraping ice off of the windscreen with a windchill -10? Shoveling the driveway of 1-2 feet of wet snow? Yeah, sometimes I actually do...but I am kinda :loco:

Basements....hell, folks don't even know what a basement is in Cali. They are as rare as seeing a democrat vote to lower taxes!

I live in SD & love it. the real down side is were on the low side of the payscale & cost of living is pretty darn high, making ends meet & enjoying the toys is kinda tuff.

Ive done quite a bit of traveling & its REAL hard to beat san diego. there is SOO much to do here, pretty much all year around. this is both a good thing & a bad thing.

Im mid 40's with non "working" wife & 2 kids (11 & 13). cost of living has really started picking up with the kids. I just caaaaaaaaaaaaaant wait for them to start driving. LOL.

I feel your pain, Bob. I'm single now with a mortgage and an 8 year-old daughter. Between the mortgage, after-school care costs, day-time summer camp fees, and 3x per week YMCA swim team practice fees...luckily, I work in a very stable industry; a daily newspaper :) Could you tell me how the schools are where you live? One of my relocation concerns is the quality of education for my daughter. Thanks for any info.

I Live in Oceanside is about 6 miles from the beach, House here you can find between 300k to 400k (3 bed and 2 1/2 bath) with 2 cars garage. My kids shool had been Blue Ribbon Aware for the last 12 years. I am not sure where about you plan to move to.....and what is your taste. I love to ride and dive so I choose Oceanside as my home base. Close to the water and the canyon :)

Thanks. I'm not sure exactly, either. I plan on flying out in September to pinpoint better where in the SD area I would like to plant myself and my daughter. I'm about 5 miles from the beach now so Oceanside sounds similar. Home prices sound do-able, also. Oceanside will be one that I eyeball when i visit. Thanks again.

This is exactly why I want to move. This is my Cul-de-Sac 1/2/08 ...see what you are missing out in SD? Oh, did I mention it's pitch freaking black by 4:15 in the winter? Nothing like driving home in the dark from work...before dinner.

The good thing here, though, is that the winters are generally short. For example, look at this pic I took in March 2008; notice how much nicer it was here compared to the January 2008 pic in the prior post.

And the summers here...well let's just say for a good solid 8 weeks in July and August it's unbeatable! Errr, except for the last 4 weeks of rain and also the fact the my furnace actually kicked on for a couple of nights.

The summers can be beautiful here with low humidity and 70s/low 80s. This pic is from that far too short season...
