My VFR is a 2000 model and it was stored for approx. 2 years. The bike was stored with the fuel tank off. This weekend I reinstalled the tank, put some fresh fuel in, installed a new battery, turned the key on, hit the starter and the engine cranks but will not start. I removed the plugs and verified that there is spark. I also verified that the pump is operational and that there is fuel pressure at the line going into the throttle body as well as the return line. The bike will fire if I pour a small amount of fuel into each of the four cylinders but dies as soon as the poured fuel is burned off. I am leaning toward an injector issue but thought that I would check here first.
was there fuel on the plugs when you pulls them out? Here's what the manual lists as possible causes (you have already checked some of these) intake air leak, fuel contaminated, pinched or clogged fuel tube, faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, clogged fuel injector filter, sticking fuel injector needle, faulty fuel pump operating system It sounds like you are on the right track now you just have to go down the list I guess.
It appears that we both were sniffing the correct trail. I hit me that although the bike was put away absent the fuel tank and the fuel tank was stored dry that at the time that the tank was removed fuel was still in the fuel lines and the injection system could be clogged with old dried up fuel. When I verified spark and fuel pressure the injectors then became suspects. I took a "Ford Tool" or hammer, tapped the injectors lightly, cycled the pump several times and the bike fired up. It was groggy for a moment then after exhaling a puff of black smoke it idled like it always has. For the next several tanks of fuel his diet will be 93 octane fuel and injector cleaner. Thanks for your comments here.
