per our conversation earlier, I was saying your shifting lever for neutral to second gear... (not the foot shift lever).

but the more I think about it, have you checked your air filter recently? or your fuel filter?

That's weird. Has it ever done that in another gear or only second? How long will it do this if you don't let off?

    shift fork

It is a damaged shift fork as described. The fork and gear will have to be replaced as well as related gear. It is the most common tranny failure for all bikes and all brands. Sorry for the bad news but I see it all the time and am fixing GSXR for the same problem .

The bigger issue is whether those parts are still available. I don't think they are.

Nope, sorry. I've not done much with the second generation bikes, though I would like to. I don't think the first gen parts work, but a quick check of the fiche could tell you that.

If you have never done one before ,it is quite a bit of work and there are a few pitfalls to it. If you decide to undertake it and I can be of any help let me know. If you are on the west coast maybe I could assist in person.

The biggest issue is that you can no longer get the parts to fix this. I can't believe they even quoted you a price. If they got started you would have been asked to come get the bike in boxes because they were not able to put it back together.

To repair the gearbox (it's not a transmission) takes quite a bit of work. I've done many of these and it takes me about 8 hours start to finish. If it's your first time figure on at least double that, probably triple. Also don't forget the special tools required!

    its not that bad

They were most likely just quoting labor for the repair to "gear box".I did my first one at 17, didn't have a choice as I did not have the funds for such a repair back then. Just take your time and go step by step and you will be done in a couple of days and have a knowledge of your bike money can't buy.

Your Official Honda Repair Manual tells you the tools that are required, assuming you have one of those manuals. If not, you need to get one. The special tools include a socket for the clutch basket (not all VF7's need this, or so I'm told) and a puller for the flywheel to name a couple. These can be purchased through your local Honda dealership.

You don't have to bother, it's common knowledge that the parts aren't available to fix. It's been this way for a couple of years now. Sorry!

    Hi,
In the United States of Europe there is a company that deals in all things shiny for all makes and models. CMSNL.com
The web site is a bit tricky to navigate but if you can look by part number it's easy.
Try, honda yamaha suzuki kawasaki parts consolidated motor spares. Bottom right of page is for an 83 Interceptor
I was having a quick look, not sure of the bits you need but they have parts left.
You can order straight from the parts fiche.
They ship worldwide at reasonable rates. I get my stuff posted to New Zealand.
I hope this helps you out and anyone else looking for hard to find spares.

    Hi,
Im the owner of a 84 VFR1000 and was wondering if this problem was also common in the 84, recently i was noticing that i was unable to put the bike under power going into 2nd, and now it feels as if it is a metal on metal scraping. I have realized that there is no parts availible, but can the gears from the VFR750 be used in the 1000's gearbox, or is the problem even to do with the gears themselves???

Yes, that is very common in fact. I'm assuming that your bike is a VF1000F (not a VFR, by the way) since you state that it's an 84. The VF750F and VF700F gearbox parts can be used in some cases as they are the same part numbers (once again, not VFR models).

The problem is with the rider's left foot - abuse. Over time the gearbox cannot take being hammered on. The design is not inherently weak, it just can't handle not being shifted properly.

2nd gear going out was common on the 83 & 84 Interceptors. Honda superceded the part # for the shift fork & drum in 84.

You may have a good chance of getting the parts, as 90% of people will/would have junked the bike instead of doing the extensive tranny repair, thus less were sold, and hopefully, that means more on a warehouse shelf waiting for you!

    The 85's were also affected.

Sorry man, these parts have been discontinued for over a year now, maybe two.
