Just fired the bike up after full carb rebuild. It runs like a house on fire.
It revs great with no flat spots or bogging.
It does idle too high- around 2000 rpm.
I still need to synch the carbs and adjust.
Does anyone know how to use a mercury synch tool?
I saw some homemade ones on E bay for 36.00. Is it worth it?

Brian you said yesterday your cables were loose. Did you get that fixed? Did the cables come out of the holders near the carbs. You adjust the cables by the carbs first and do the final adjustment by the grip last. This could be your high idle problem.

    checking cables

I tightened the throttle cable adjuster near the handle bar and that seemed to improve the throttle response.
I think that I need to check the choke cable, though. I think I may have a hangup in the choke linkage.
Good point to make sure all the cables are good before I start playing with the carbs. Will do.
