So, I own a 81 BMW R65. I've had it for almost 10 years. Very good bike, never let me down. After some touring, I think I need something bigger. Saw an ad for a 93 VFR, $3500. I've heard alot of good things about them, seen quite a few on the road. I went and looked at it, been dropped a few times at least once on each side, lower fairing definately needs replacement. It has gravel gashes and is loose. The turn signals appear to be held between the upper and lower fairing and because the lower fairing is thrashed the signals are loose. Both work, do they self-cancel? The upper is fine both sides, windscreen fine, glass in one mirror cracked. Broken speedometer maybe from being dropped. It broke at 30000 miles don't know how long ago that was. Broken clutch lever. Left side foot peg only couple inches long. The rear body work seemed ok, better than front. But when I heard that baby fire up, my heart started pounding! Ran a little rough in the lower rpms, but it got up and went when you rolled it on. Maybe carbs need synching or something? Super comfy riding position. Very impressed. Could anyone give me an estimate on what some of this stuff could end up costing. Levers and foot peg maybe $25 a piece, but the speedo and body work, as well as a factory tune job on the carbs. What would an average nice 93 go for with 30,000miles? I know in Beemer land 30,000 is just breakin it in. This bike was pretty abused is $3500 asking too much? Keep hearing that V-4 in the back of my head!

Yes $3500 is asking too much. I got a 93 with a lot less wrong than that (but had 38,500 on it) for $2700. The turn signals are made into the upper fairing. If the signals are loose, then either they have been replaced with something else or the upper fairing is broken. The turn signals do not self cancel. Plastic is gonna be expensive. Lowest prices I have found are at Service Honda (www.servicehonda.com) Mid fairings are about $300 each. Upper fairing are aronud $400 I think. Lower fairings are about $200. A clutch lever and a foot peg should not be much at all. You mention she speedo is broken. It could be the cable, the drive at the sprocket, or the speedo unit itself. Rough running...maybe it needs a carb sync. The V-4's are indeed great motors. You can see pics of mine in the photo gallery. But IMO, it's not worth $3500. I also saw one at a nearby dealer that was on consignment. Price on it is $3000. But the owner painted the bike a plain white and painted over the decals and stickers. Again, IMO, that oen is not worth the $3K that is being asked either and it is in better shape than the one you are describing above.

I have to agree that $3500 is too much for that bike. For that kind of money, you should be able to get an equivalent bike in great running order, with minimal or no crash damage. By the time you get that bike looking nice and running right, you will have spent probably closer to $4000 or $4500. You can get one much newer and nicer for that kind of money.
I paid $3200 for my 1995 w/ 15k miles. Came with a corbin seat and Yoshimura carbon can slip-on...cosmetically, it was in almost perfect shape (well, heh, till I dropped it, but thats another story). Anyway, in my opinion, you should pass on that bike. Its too much cash and needs too much work....also, consider that such an abused bike may not have been well cared for, so who knows what else may be wrong with it.....

good luck on your decision !

    Mike

Hi - I found a viffer for sale on this site as another point of reference for price/condition:
    http://vfrworld.com/forums/third-fourth-generation-1990-1997/155-1990-vfr750-sale.html

Its a '90 model in great condition and they are asking less than the one you looked at. The price issue aside I would not go near this sad and sorry example of Mr Hondas finest. The owner might have simply had a run of bad luck but IMOH my gut is saying that its likely that the mechanics of the bike have not been looked after as well.

I'm sure you will have luck finding better examples of this great bike - dont lose faith and just keeping playing that V4 soundtrack in your head until one belongs to you!

    Cheers!

sounds pricey. I got my 98 for $3750 with 35k on it and lots of goodies. Never dropped (til I got it anyway <G>) You are close enough to Cali to look this way for a bike. There are tons of them for sale around here. Try vfrdiscussion.com also in their classifieds. Look at craigslist.org . That's where I found my last three bikes.

Waaayyy too much for the bike in fair condition, much less than in the condition in which you described. I just sold my 99 for $4000.00, so there are better deals out there. Oh, and welcome to the group:welcome:
