Hi all, I'm thinking about getting either a 4th or 5th gen VFR, and wondered about opinions/experiences with each.

I've ridden both, found the 750 a little sportier and the 800 a little more cushy, but not enough of either to decide.

I read that the 800 fuel mileage is around 36-38? Hm. The 750?

    Any other thoughts appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

I would go with the 800 for a few reasons.

    1) Aftermarket and used parts will be much easier to find if you ever need them.

    2) Fuel injection vs carbs

    3) Linked Braking

    4) Supercharger is available for the 5th Gens for a low low price of only $5000 (@ 160 hp  )

    Regards,

Tis true about aftermarket part availability for the 4th gens...For example, I think only 1 manufacturer continues to make a slip-on, I can only find one manufacturer for new windscreens, etc.

I'm sure the price difference between the two will have some influence on your decision.

Don't think about it too long, summer is a-wastin

I had a 4th and now have a 5th. If you go for a 5th and go for suspension and or brake upgrades, the sportyness between the 2 bikes is a wash. The stock 5th gen suspension is pretty much junk. But motor wise the 5th will spank the 4th.

The 4th is a little jewel of a bike. A bit more personal feeling, something like Ducati would have built.

Find the low mile bike you like and buy it. Either way you cant go wrong.

its a different strokes kinda thing... some like the linked brakes and FI of the 800....i personally prefer the 750 ...did not like the linked brake idea in 98..and kept the 96.. cant go wron either way......fit and finish on the 750 among the best i have seen.

Well the 5th gen linked brakes can be "fixed"...lol.....

Agree on the fit and finish of the 4th gen -excellent. I still like the analog gages on the 750. Sweet!

Gen 4 is the last CLASSIC VFR.

Gear-driven cams have always been at the heart of a VFR, so don't do without them.

If you fear wrenches and screwdrivers, prefer computers, then go for the complexity of fuel injection, not carbs.

I'm a carb man myself, but I am trying to move into a more modern machine-my sport bike is 32 years old!

Thanks for the tips-any comment on fuel consumption?

I have a good friend with a 5th Gen and his fuel economy is the same as mine 45-50 mpg. Harder riding gets into the low 40's. Both bikes have stock pipes and jetting/mapping.

My 5th gen with a PClll & custom map will get low 30's when ridden with anger, when I rode with RVFR his 4th gen would smoke my 5th gen in the gas mileage department...

    parts

I would consider the OE parts the most important, aftermarket as well.I say gen 5 on that alone.

I had a 3rd gen and liked it alot.
Swapped for a 5th gen and I gotta say I like it better. The linked brakes work for me and the susp is easier to mess with.
The parts issue can be a pain on the older bikes, so keep that in mind! My '01 has 74k mi and finding parts is alot easier (r/r in VT on a sat!!)
Either one will be a winner
    Have fun!!

No problem getting OEM parts for the 4th gen. I have had mine since new in 1994 and if was not so good I might buy another bike; it is the perfect motorcycle IMO.
